Minnesota annnounced Monday that sixth-year wide receiver Chris Autman-Bell will have season-ending surgery on his right leg, a big loss for the unbeaten Gophers as they begin Big Ten play without their best pass catcher. Autman-Bell was hurt in Minnesot a's 49-7 win over Colorado on Saturday, when he landed awkwardly while trying to catch on off-target throw in the second quarter. He grabbed his leg in pain, needed help leaving the field and was sent to a hospital for further examination. "Your heart br eaks for him, because he's worked incredibly hard," coach P.J. Fleck said. The procedure will take place on Wednesday.Fleck didn't specify the diagnosis, other than to describe the injury as to Autman-Bell's lower leg. The Gophers will apply to th e NCAA for a medical redshirt that would allow him to return for a seventh season, should he wish to. The native of Kankakee, Illinois, who was in Fleck's first recruiting class at Minnesota after flipping his commitment and following him from Western Mi chigan, redshirted that first year. The 2020 season didn't count against anyone's eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With 1,970 career receiving yards, Autman-Bell ranks ninth in program history. He caught a 39-yard touchdown pass against Colorado before he was hurt. The team's leading returning receiver from 2021, when he had 36 catches for 506 yards and six touchdowns, Autman-Bell has again been quarterback Tanner Morgan's favored target. - AP College Football

Minnesota had six kickoff times announced by the Big Ten on Thursday, including its start against Penn State at 6:30 p.m. at Beaver Stadium in University Park, Pa. This might be Penn State's "whiteout" game, where more than 100,000 fans in attendance wea r the same color. The last time the U traveled to Penn State in 2016, then-Nittany Lions running back Saquon Barkley's overtime touchdown run propelled them to a 29-26 win. In 2019, No. 13 Minnesota topped No. 5 Penn State 31-26 to win back the Governor' s Victory Bell in Minneapolis.The Gophers had five other start times announced for the 2022 season. The season opener against Jerry Kill's New Mexico State squad is at 8 p.m. Sept. 1 at Huntington Bank Stadium. The nonconference home games against Western Illinois (11 a.m. Sept. 10) and Colorado (2:30 p.m. on Sept. 17). When Chris Autman-Bell was injured in preseason camp last August, the loss of the Gophers' No. 1 target was a major blow to its passing game to start the season. The loss hurt further because the receiver was believed to be peaking going into his fifth c ollegiate season. "Chris Autman-Bell had the best training camp I've seen by a wide receiver since I've been coaching," coach P.J. Fleck said in March. "Then he got hurt, and he fought that through...the first few games, then he came back and got hurt on the first play of one of the games we lost (to Bowling Green). I'm looking forward to him having, hopefully, a very healthy season because he looks amazing." Autman-Bell didn't say in mid-April how long that ankle injury affected his play last year. He had career highs in receptions (36), yards (506) and touchdowns (six) in 11 games, but it wasn't the type of production expected out of WR1.It was also a passing game-wide epidemic. "Last year was super frustrating," Autman-Bell said. "I stayed po sitive the whole time and had a smile on my face and kept pushing, because it's bigger than me." With receiver Chris Autman-Bell's announcement Thursday he will return for the 2022 season, the U will need to do more to keep him healthy. During training camp in August, the U's No. 1 receiver was injured in a tackling drill that cost him games and pro ductivity. It was puzzling to see such a vital player involved in that drill, which had no upside for an established player like "CrAB." Star running back Mo Ibrahim, meanwhile, was on the sideline for that same drill. The U knows what Autman-Bell can do , and the sixth-year wideout shouldn't be a part of those activities leading up to the 2022 season. - Pioneer Press

To bring the band back together, you need all pieces. Gophers top receiver Chris Autman-Bell did his part in announcing Thursday he would return for a sixth season with Minnesota in 2022. Autman-Bell led Minnesota in all three receiving categories last s eason: 35 catches, 490 yards and six touchdowns. He played in only 10 of 12 regular-season games and was limited in a few others with ankle injuries. Autman-Bell participated in Senior Day festivities in the season finale against Wisconsin on Nov. 27 but decided it won't be his last game in maroon and gold at Huntington Bank Stadium. Autman-Bell joins fellow 2017 classmates, quarterback Tanner Morgan and running back Mo Ibrahim, in saying they will be back with Minnesota next season. - Pioneer Press

After seeing their top wide receiver, Chris Autman-Bell, leave Thursday night's practice at Huntington Bank Stadium because of a right leg injury, the Gophers received some good news Monday. Autman-Bell's injury is a week-to-week issue, not a long-term o ne, coach P.J. Fleck said on KFXN-FM. "He's one of the toughest kids we have on this football team," Fleck said, without going into specifics on the injury. "...He's week to week. He's doing great...We'll get him back here very shortly. He'll be in and o ut of some practices here and there...This is not a long-term issue, so everybody take a big, deep breath." Fleck considered the diagnosis a relief. "Absolutely. Any time a young man gets hurt, you think worst-case scenario, and you think, 'Please tell m e best-case scenario," he said. With Rashod Bateman preparing for his jump to the NFL, Minnesota's receiving corps is undergoing its biggest transition in Fleck's era at the U. Junior Chris Autman-Bell has totaled 78 receptions for 1,250 yards over his three-year career, but nobody els e on the roster has been a consistent contributor. "Wide receiver is probably going to be one of the more youthful and inexperienced positions," Fleck said. "...Coach (Matt) Simon, I said, 'We got our work cut out for us this year.' Playing Robin to Bateman's Batman will be Autman-Bell, a junior with a knack for big-game heroics. His incredible toe-tapping TD catch to force OT against Fresno State and his tunnel screen TD against Penn State were two of the most impactful plays for t he Gophers in 2019.
