2022 ALL-BIG TEN FOOTBALL HONORABLE MENTION (COACHES): Christian Izien,...Izien garners All-Big Ten recognition for the third-straight season after totaling 84 tackles with five for loss, four pass breakups and a blocked punt. Starting all 12 games, he had two games recording double-digit stops with a high of 15 versus Iowa and became the 14th player in program history to reach 300 career tackles (303). - Rutgers Football

  08/15/21 - SS Christian IzienrSr/2023, Rutgers, 5-09, 199 (DS#11 SS) + More +

Rutgers is hoping Christian Izien can pick up where he left off last season. The Scarlet Knights safety is confident he will. The Queens native started all nine contests in 2020 and piled up 66 tackles to go along with three fumble recoveries. But the 5-foot-10, 200-pound Izien showed clear progress over the course of the season and racked up four interceptions in the final three games. Izien believes he can continue that momentum once this season starts. "Definitely better preparation of course, but some scheme things as well," Izien said following Rutgers' practice on Monday. "Some things we're going to go forward with this season, just to help the team overall, help me be in a better position to make plays."

He became one of the most impactful playmakers for Rutgers' defense toward the end of last season. Izien earned his first career interception against Penn State, then had another in the Scarlet Knights' win over Maryland before picking off two more passes in the season finale against Nebraska. His four interceptions ranked tied for third in the Big Ten and eighth in the nation. - Asbury Park Press

  05/08/21 - SS Christian IzienrSr/2023, Rutgers, 5-09, 199 (DS#11 SS) + More +

In the four final games of last season, Christian Izien became one of the most impactful playmakers for Rutgers' defense. Four interceptions. Two fumble recoveries. Thirty-five tackles. It was the version of Izien that the Scarlet Knights needed to see, and the version that wasn't always there through the early part of the season. "He did improve," coach Greg Schiano said. "And I think it's a confidence thing. I don't mean that he didn't have confidence, but he became confident in what we were asking him to do."

That increase in confidence helped lead to big results. Now Rutgers needs the junior safety to build on that going into the 2021 season. The Queens native finished 2020 with 66 tackles, and his team-leading four picks ranked tied for third in the Big Ten and eighth in the nation. Izien is one of the most experienced players in Rutgers' secondary, which right now doesn't have an abundance of depth at safety. Schiano said at the start of spring practices that the team could move players over from cornerback to fill those holes. Izien would give Rutgers' defense a significant boost if he can pick up where he left off last season. - Asbury Park Press
