When Brent Cimaglia was seeking a transfer destination after graduating from Tennessee, the kicker had a salesman on the inside at Georgia Tech. The testimony of punter and kickoff specialist Austin Kent, himself a grad transfer from UCLA, helped convince Cimaglia to transfer to Tech. "I've known him since eighth grade," Cimaglia said Thursday. "And really just hearing his stories about how fun Georgia Tech was, it was an easy decision." Cimaglia entered the transfer portal in late January, announced his decision to enroll at Tech in February and arrived in the summer. Using the extra season of eligibility provided by the NCAA because of COVID-19, he has one season remaining.

His experience and accuracy over four seasons with the Volunteers (he made 46 of 62 field-goal tries) figure to be a boost for Tech, which has been 3-for-8 each of the past two seasons. He was 4-for-4, with a long of 48 yards, in the team's scrimmage Saturday. "From Austin being my holder to Cade Long being the snapper to coach (Brent) Key setting up the line and the protection, I think we have a very good unit this year," Cimaglia said. "Can't wait to go out there first game and put some points on the board." Cimaglia spoke highly of the team environment at Tech, which guard Ryan Johnson, also a former Volunteer, had told him about. Cimaglia was skeptical before visiting. "So I came down, and it was just amazing," he said. "From the coaches to the players to the school to academics, everybody was just amazing. Really friendly." - Atlanta Journal Constitution

Georgia Tech has secured a transfer who has the potential to significantly upgrade the kicking game in Tennessee kicker Brent Cimaglia, who announced he will join the Yellow Jackets as a grad transfer. Cimaglia made the announcement Sunday. In four seasons with the Volunteers, Cimaglia made 46 of 62 field-goal tries (74.2%) and was 88-for-89 on point-after tries. In 2019-20, he was 16-for-22 on field-goal tries from 40 yards and out. In the 2019 season, he was 23-for-27 and was a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award, given to the nation's top kicker. He took 10 kickoffs as a freshman, recording four touchbacks. - Atlanta Journal Constitution

Tennessee kicker Brent Cimaglia will join the stream of Vols departures and head for the NCAA transfer portal, with plans to use his final season of college eligibility elsewhere. Cimaglia, a senior, announced the decision on Friday via Twitter. Cimaglia went 5-for-9 on field-goal attempts in 2020 before opting out of the final two games, citing a need to focus on his physical and mental health. He missed an extra-point attempt in UT's 31-19 loss to Florida on Dec. 5, the final game of his Vols career. He had made all 88 attempts until the fourth-quarter miss. Cimaglia, who played at Page High School in Franklin, Tennessee, was 46 for 62 on field goals during his career. His best season came in 2019, when he converted 23 of 27 attempts, earning the nickname "Automaglia." - Knoxville News Sentinel

Tennessee kicker Brent Cimaglia has opted out of the Volunteers' final two games of the season, citing injuries and a need to focus on his mental well-being. Cimaglia said in a post on social media Monday that took him some time to come to that conclusion. "However my focus is to work on my mental well-being and physical health," Cimaglia wrote. "Due to many hardships and struggles within the program, it is in my best interest to take this additional time to rehabilitate ongoing injuries. I look forward to giving my best in the future."

Cimaglia made 85.1% of his kicks last season. This season the senior is just 5-of-9 on field goals and missed an extra point in Saturday's 31-19 loss to No. 6 Florida, his first miss after 88 made extra points. Tennessee coach Jeremy Pruitt said he talked with Cimaglia, who has played through "difficult circumstances" this season. Pruitt said Cimaglia also indicated he will come back next season with this season not counting against player eligibility. "He feels like that it's better for him not to participate the remainder of the season and put him in a better spot to get ready for next year," Pruitt said. - AP College Football
