Two key defensive players are expected back for Michigan football this fall, sources tell MLive, providing much-needed experience and leadership to a unit ravaged by injury this past fall. Defensive tackle Donovan Jeter and linebacker Josh Ross are both planning to return to the Wolverines for the 2021 season, utilizing an extra year of eligibility provided by the COVID-19 abbreviated schedule this past fall. While neither player has publicly announced their decision, Jeter and Ross have not entered the NCAA transfer portal nor declared for the 2021 NFL draft, which they are both eligible for. Jeter, a senior, has appeared in 24 games over the last three seasons. - Ann Arbor News

Donovan Jeter saw action in 10 games last season, but one stands out above the rest. The redshirt junior tackle was part of a Michigan defensive line that gave up 359 rushing yards in a lopsided loss to Wisconsin in 2019, a game that helped dash the Wolv erines' Big Ten title hopes and prompted self-reflection from coaches and players. Jeter included, who candidly told reporters on Tuesday that he "played horribly" in that game. "That kind of affected my mindset throughout the rest of the year," Jeter sa id. "I didn't really get back into myself until right around the bowl game, Alabama, honestly. I told myself after that game, 'I'm never going to have that feeling last year." That feeling, Jeter said, that he could have done more. It was the most rushin g yards allowed by a Michigan team in three years - and set the stage for what became a season of disappointment, with the Wolverines going 9-4 despite having an experienced team, playmakers on both sides of the ball and 10 future NFL draft picks. "Lack of physicality," Jeter said. "Left a lot of plays out there. My technique was horrible. It was a multitude of things. After the season, I went back and just worked." Which might explain Jeter's offseason transformation. He spent most of the spring and summer at home in Beaver Falls, Pa., where be benefitted during the COVID-19 pandemic with regular home-cooked meals from his mother, workout equipment in the basement and a track down the street. The result? A more dedicated, and bulkier, Jeter. He' s listed at 6-foot-3 and 318 pounds this year, up 28 pounds from last season, and earned rave reviews from coaches and teammates for his work ethic in camp. "It was definitely different training at home, training in the basement," Jeter said. "It felt li ke I was back in high school again. "But I think it was a huge plus for me to get back to the basics and just work hard." - Ann Arbor News

As Michigan's football team puts on the pads this week and begins contact practices, one name to keep an eye on up front is Donovan Jeter. The redshirt junior has slowly worked his way up the Wolverines' depth chart at defensive tackle in recent years, a ppearing as a rotational player in 10 games during the 2019 season. Now, it appears, Jeter could be in line for a starting role. "Donovan Jeter is playing better than I ever anticipated that he could play," Michigan defensive coordinator Don Brown told r eporters on Wednesday. "He has exceeded all expectations. And he and Carlo Kemp have given us solid play inside." One of the two tackle spots remain the only real mystery along the Wolverines' defensive line this fall. Aidan Hutchinson and Kwity Paye hav e locked up starting roles at defensive end, while fifth-year senior and defensive co-captain last year, Carlo Kemp, is a sure bet to start at tackle. If Michigan decides to play with more four-down linemen in 2020, and it appears like it plans to do jus t that, the 6-foot-3, 318-pound Jeter will play a role. - Ann Arbor News
