 John Torchio, Wisconsin, Player News

The Guaranteed Rate Bowl was John Torchio's last game in a Wisconsin uniform. The senior safety said in November he wasn't returning to UW for a sixth season in 2023 but then after the bowl game revealed he was reconsidering that decision. Torchio ended any doubt Saturday night by announcing on Twitter that he plans to enter the 2023 NFL draft.

The former walk-on from California recorded four tackles and broke up one pass in his final college game, a 24-17 UW victory. He finished the season fourth on the team in tackles with 56 and led UW in interceptions with five. He returned two interceptions for touchdowns - one for 100 yards in the opener against Illinois State and one for 31 yards against Purdue. - Journal Sentinel

Wisconsin teammates John Torchio and Braelon Allen created a couple of truly memorable moments in an otherwise forgettable season-opening matchup. Allen had a 96-yard touchdown scamper for the longest run from scrimmage in program history and Torchio had the school's longest interception return as the 18th-ranked Badgers trounced Championship Subdivision program Illinois State 38-0 on Saturday night. The two record-setting touchdowns showcased Wisconsin's big-play ability across its roster. "You guys saw it tonight," said Allen, who rushed for 148 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries. "Not even just on the offense. We had the longest interception return for a touchdown as well. I think both sides of the ball have explosive playmakers." Torchio opened the scoring with a 100-yard interception return late in the first quarter after Illinois State had reached the red zone.

According to outside linebacker Nick Herbig, Torchio predicted the interception before the ball was snapped. "I'm getting lined up, and Torch says, ‘Hey, Herbie, I'm about to pick this one," said Herbig, who had two of Wisconsin's four sacks. "I'm like, ‘All right.' So I'm pass rushing, and I turn around and sure enough, there's Torch with the ball in his hand. He's called the ‘Jewelry Thief' for a reason." Torchio broke the record previously held by Joe Ferguson, who scored on a 99-yard interception return in a 59-10 victory over Utah State in 2017. Wisconsin's longest run from scrimmage before Allen's breakaway was James White's 93-yard burst in a 51-3 triumph over Indiana in 2013. - Wisconsin/AP College Football

Wisconsin defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard closed spring practice with two healthy safeties who had played in a college game, John Torchio and Hunter Wohler. Leonhard played five safeties last season, but Scott Nelson and Collin Wilder left to prepare for the 2022 NFL draft and Travian Blaylock suffered what appeared to be a serious knee injury during spring practice. "It's a big concern of mine to not have that depth," Leonhard said during spring ball. "You're an injury away from being light. I know we have some flexibility within the corner group to help out. If we need to use that, we will. It's definitely concerning coming out of spring, the depth at the position." UW was expected to consider adding a transfer at the position and on Saturday the Badgers offered KaMo'i LaTu, who announced recently he is leaving Utah. Latu, 6-foot and 190 pounds played mostly on special teams as a freshman in 2020 and recorded four tackles. He finished last season with 19 tackles, 11 solo, and three passes broken up. - Journal Sentinel
