Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach texted his quarterback, Pat Mahomes, to gauge his thoughts on who the team should select with their first-round pick. "I said, 'Give me a name and don't think about it,'" Veach said. "He said, 'Clyde.' I sai d, 'Good.' " When the time came for the 32nd and final pick of Thursday's first round of the NFL draft, the reigning Super Bowl champions had their man, scooping up the LSU and Catholic High star ahead of such highly regarded running back prospects like D'Andre Swift of Georgia and Wisconsin's Jonathan Taylor. "Once I heard it was the Chiefs," Edwards-Helaire said, "my heart just dropped." Once he heard about what Mahomes said, his heart was full. "It just made me feel wanted," Edwards-Helaire said. "I immediately thought of the competition and how intense everything would be. But I'm more than happy. This is a franchise that just won the Super Bowl. It's time to go in and work immediately. LSU bookended the first round of the NFL draft. The first pick was obvious, the final one was not. The Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs grabbed running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire at No. 32 overall to close out the first round. Edwards-Helaire was t he fifth LSU player selected, breaking the SEC record for first-rounders from a single school. Edwards-Helaire's next step comes after a season that saw the 5-foot-7 running back exceed expectations on LSU's stacked roster. The Baton Rouge native logged more than 100 total yards in nine of LSU's 15 games, along with 16 rushing touchdowns.The rushing touchdown total was the most in the SEC tied with Jeremy Hill for the 5th-most in a single season in LSU history. The 1,414 yards, accrued on just 21 5 carries, was No. 3 in LSU history behind just Charles Alexander's 16,87 in 1977 and Leonard Fournette's 1,953 in 2015, both of whom had more than 300 carries in their respective seasons. Edwards-Helaire's biggest performance came on what may have been LSU's biggest stage of the season, on the road against Alabama. The junior running back ran for 103 yards and three touchdowns and caught 9 passes for 77 yards and another touchdown. Steve Ensminger said this LSU offense is the one he waited 38 years to coach. Now, with No. 1 LSU only one win away from the national championship game, that special offense has been dealt an unexpected setback. Clyde Edwards-Helaire, the All-Southeaster n Conference running back whose versatile skills are vital to the Tigers' attack, could miss Saturday's Peach Bowl playoff semifinal against No. 4 Oklahoma with a hamstring injury. Edwards-Helaire needed crutches and a scooter to move around last week af ter hurting his hamstring in practice. He was not seen in the portion of Tuesday's practice that was open to reporters. After Edwards-Helair did not practice on Monday, coach Ed Orgeron said, "We're going to see if he can do something" on Tuesday. The ap parent answer is the junior was not ready to join practice.Before the practice, Ensminger said he was confident Edwards-Helair will play. Instead, Ensminger may need a backup plan to keep his dream offense on the move. It's no easy assignment for the offensive coordinator, because the LSU spread offense has set a high standard in 2019. The Tigers lead the nation in total offense. They rank second in passing and third in scoring while producing the Heisman Trophy winner in Joe Burrow and the Bilet nikoff Award winner in wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase. Top-ranked LSU's leading rusher Clyde Edwards-Helaire is off crutches but still may miss Saturday's Peach Bowl playoff semifinal against No. 4 Oklahoma. The Sooners, meanwhile, will be missing starting defensive end Ronnie Perkins and two backups due to suspensions. Edwards-Helaire suffered a hamstring injury in practice last week. He was only an observer for LSU's first practice in Atlanta on Monday. He leads the undefeated Tigers (13-0) with 1,290 yards rushing and 16 touchdowns. LSU coach Ed Orgeron says Edwards-Helaire is “a little bit better" and he described the running back's status as day to day. "We're going to see if he can do something tomorrow," Orgeron said.Based on Orgeron's comments, it would be a surprise if Edwards-Helaire pla ys. The coach spoke of the junior first-team All-SEC player in the past tense when comparing his running backs, including freshman backups Tyrion Davis-Price and John Emery. "I think all three of those guys do different things," Orgeron said. "With Clyde , he did everything well. He blocked well. He ran inside, he ran outside and caught the football. We'll have to adjust if Clyde doesn't play to rotate those guys and do what they do best." Quarterback Joe Burrow was second on the team with 289 yards rush ing. LSU coaches called one last play for running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire in hopes of getting him his fourth-straight 100-yard game. Perhaps it was only fitting that Edwards-Helaire, who needed just a yard, would break loose for a career-long 89-yard touch down run. The top-ranked Tigers' new spread offense has been producing explosive plays all season -- a big reason why they've booked a trip to the Southeastern Conference title game for the first time since 2011. Joe Burrow passed for 327 yards and three touchdowns, Edwards-Helaire rushed for a career-high 188 yards and three TDs and No. 1 LSU remained unbeaten with a 56-20 victory over reeling Arkansas on Saturday night.LSU (11-0, 7-0) can finish no worse than in a tie for first with Alabama (10 -1, 6-1) in the SEC West and owns the tiebreaker with its 46-41 triumph in Tuscaloosa on Nov. 9. "We expected this coming into the year. If we were not 11-0 right now, we would be disappointed," Burrow said. "That's a testament to our hard work, but we'v e got more ahead of us." Clyde Edwards-Helaire had seemingly sealed one of the most satisfying victories in the history of LSU football with a tackle-breaking touchdown run late in the fourth quarter. Back on the sideline as delirious Tigers fans began to celebrate in Bryant-Den ny Stadium, Edwards-Helaire could hardly control his emotions. The junior running back who grew up 20 minutes from Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was practically sobbing as he hugged an assistant coach. His work was not yet done, though. Just l ike that, Alabama scored again. LSU needed another first down to finally put an end to an eight-game losing streak against its SEC West rival. The Tigers gave the ball to Edwards-Helaire and the 5-foot-8, 209-pounder powered for 12 yards. Game over. "It was just an overwhelming feeling," Edwards-Helaire said.Justifiably, quarterback Joe Burrow was hailed as the hero of LSU's 46-41 victory against Alabama on Saturday, but the contributions of the Tigers' diminutive workhorse could not be understat ed. Edwards-Helaire carried 20 times for 103 yards and three touchdowns, and he led the team with nine catches for 77 yards and another score. Time and again, the former three-star recruit made plays that stemmed the Tide's attempt at a comeback. "He cre ates such a matchup disadvantage for the defense," Burrow said. "He runs great routes. Then you also have to stop him on the downhill runs. He's going to play for a long time." LSU has built its offense around powerful tailbacks in recent years, from Jer emy Hill to Leonard Fournette to Derrius Guice. Edwards-Helaire, who followed Guice at Cathlolic High School in Baton Rouge, has a different skill set -- one that fits perfectly into LSU's new offense.
