From his home in Mount Vernon, Iowa offensive lineman Tristan Wirfs speaks to Buccaneers reporters after he was taken No. 13 overall in the draft. Hawk Central When Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht saw one of the most athletic offensive tackles to ever enter the NFL Draft available at No. 13, he couldn't pass up a chance to wait until No. 14. Licht, who once worked with Iowa offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz while they were on staff with the New England Patriots from 2009 to 2011, traded up one spot Thursday night to land Hawkeyes right tackle Tristan Wirfs.

"He can run, which is a great asset for an offensive tackle to have, but it's not the No. 1 thing," Licht said, a nod to the 6-foot-5, 320-pound Wirfs' blazing 4.85-second run in the 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine. "We like the fact that he comes out of a program where they're known for developing offensive linemen. Kirk Ferentz and … the entire staff there are very good coaches, so it's a big plus when you can get a guy out of a great program like that. They know how to work." And with that selection, Wirfs became one of the stars of the NFL Draft's virtual night. He earlier was part of a viral video that showed the giant 21-year-old holding flowers and waiting at the end of a red carpet that was rolled out in the front yard of his Mount Vernon, Iowa, home. Wirfs hugged his mom, Sarah, who raised him and his younger sister. A few hours later, the phone call came from the Bucs, letting him know that they were trading up to get him. - Iowa City Press-Citizen

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers traded up one spot in the 2020 NFL Draft to select offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs out of Iowa with their first pick. General Manager Jason Licht traded up in the first round for the first time in his Buccaneer tenure, striking a deal with John Lynch and the San Francisco 49ers to move up to No. 13 and select Wirfs. As part of the deal, the Buccaneers are sending their fourth-round pick to the Niners and are also receiving another seventh-round pick. Wirfs will presumably help fill a hole at right tackle. It leaves the Buccaneers with a six more picks, though none in the fourth round and two in the seventh. - Buccaneers.com

Wirfs went to Iowa as a tackle. Ferentz figured it could be on either side. It became both sides, but mostly on the right, and not because he wouldn't have been (in Ferentz's mind) just as good on the left. "I would play him at left tackle if I was still in the NFL," Ferentz said. "Maybe that's why I'm not, but that's where I'd play him. Tackles are such a valuable commodity ... at any level." Ferentz explained why Wirfs' regular spot at Iowa became right tackle. The Hawkeyes prepared for their 2017 season with two bright prospects at tackle, but neither slated to start. One was Alaric Jackson, who got to Iowa a year before Wirfs and took a redshirt in 2016. Both Iowa starting tackles got hurt early in '17. Jackson, who wound up making second team All-Big Ten in 2019, had been with the program longer and got first shot at left tackle.

Ferentz is good at recruiting and developing offensive linemen and prefers not to use kids fresh out of high school, but when the right tackle job soon came open, Wirfs plugged in and played most of the season, emerging as Ferentz's first true freshman to start in the offensive trenches. Wirfs wound up playing three games at left tackle in 2019 when Jackson was hurt. "It really doesn't matter to me," Wirfs said at the Combine. "Coach Ferentz doesn't think there is much of a difference. I played right most of the time, and if I needed to flip to left, I would do it in the middle of the series, in the middle of drives. "If playing guard is where I'm needed, then I'll play that." - Beacon Journal

At 6-foot-5, 322 pounds, Iowa's former offensive tackle might not look like the most athletically gifted player. But he posted a better vertical jump (36.5 inches) than two of the draft's top receivers - Jerry Jeudy (35) and CeeDee Lamb (34-5). He also won three prep state championships in the discus, two in the shot put and was an elite swimmer by age 6. Still don't buy it? There's a video of Wirfs jumping out of the water and straight onto a pool deck. - AP College Football

Tristan Wirfs has done a lot of things well during his first two seasons as a starter on the Iowa offensive line. He also understands that the devil is in the details and as he prepares for his junior season, those details start with the hands for the returning honorable mention all-Big Ten tackle. "It's something I hear in my sleep, "Hands up. Hands up," and the coaches are right, it's something I have to do and do consistently if I want to become the player I know I can become," Wirfs said.

"That's something I've been working on since I got here. I had a tendency to play with my hands lower than they needed to me. I'm making progress. I'm playing with them higher than where they were before, but I still need to play with my hands at a higher level." Wirfs understands that is part of what it will take for him to take his game to the next level, something he expects to accomplish while continuing to focus on the fundamentals as Iowa works toward the start of fall camp in less than a month. - Mason City Globe Gazette
