After years of hard work, running back AJ Dillon of Boston College football has earned his big break. Though the selection process wasn't in the format he would've expected at the beginning of the year due to changes as a result of COVID-19, Dillon nonetheless had the coveted chance to hear his name called by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell 2020 NFL Draft on Friday night. Dillon, projected by many top NFL news sources to go no higher than the fourth round, was selected at No. 62 overall in the second round by the Green Bay Packers.

After an unparallelled three-year career with BC, including records in both career rushing yards and career rushing touchdowns-4,382 yards and 38 touchdowns, respectively-he has finally earned a spot in the big leagues. In addition to his BC records, he also finished his career at BC just 227 yards shy of the ACC record for career rushing yards. Dillon's selection at No. 62 is the highest selection of a BC running back since William Green was taken No. 16 overall by the Cleveland Browns. In fact, he's only the third BC running back to be selected in this century, with Green and Andre Williams as the only other two at his position. - The Heights

Former Boston College running back AJ Dillon initially planned on making the 2020 NFL Draft a family affair. Dillon wanted to share his defining moment at a get-together in his hometown of New London, Conn., but his plans got deep-sixed by the global COVID-19 pandemic. Dillon also planned on visiting with his former teammates at BC Pro Day on March 18. Dillon has been living and training in Orange County, Calif., since departing the Heights at the conclusion of the 2019 season. He will learn his next football destination by monitoring the draft on television in relative solitude while awaiting the subsequent phone call. "My plan was obviously to go back to Connecticut and probably go out somewhere because I have a huge extended family," said Dillon during a Zoom conference on Monday.

"I wanted to have a big party at a restaurant and watch it, but you have to adjust and I'm going to stay here in Orange County. I didn't want to risk getting on a plane and bringing that back home to my family. "I have friends that did that and their whole family got sick so it's not worth it to me." Dillon's first priority after declaring for the draft was to get into "Combine shape." He prepped for February's NFL Combine at the Athletic Gaines performance center in Woodland Hills, Calif. Dillon posted an overall grade of 84 with a dash speed of 4.53, a 41-inch vertical leap and a 131-inch broad jump. He made 23 bench reps at 225 pounds. "I have no doubt in my mind that I was going to go to the Combines and put up the numbers and perform the way I did," said Dillon. - Boston Herald

2020 NFL COMBINE INVITE: AJ Dillon, RB, Boston College,...Dillon was named an Associated Press Third-Team All-American following a standout junior season. Dillon left BC with 4,382 career rushing yards and 38 rushing touchdowns; both school records. His 4,618 all-purpose yards and 40 total touchdowns are also the most in Boston College history.

Following a breakout freshman campaign in 2017, Dillon was named the ACC Rookie of the Year and ACC Offensive Rookie of the Year. He was also voted to the FWAA and ESPN.com Freshman All-America teams. Dillon earned the George "Bulger" Lowe Award, "New England's Heisman Trophy", in 2017. He repeated that feat in 2019. For the third straight season, Dillon was named to the All-ACC first-team in 2019. His 14 career 150-yard rushing games were the most by any ACC player over the last 20 seasons.   Boston College junior running back AJ Dillon announced Tuesday that he has elected to forego his senior season and enter the 2020 NFL Draft. Dillon's decorated career included becoming the all-time leading rusher and all-time leader in rushing touchdowns and total touchdowns in Boston College history. Dillon will not play in BC's bowl game versus Cincinnati on January 2 in Birmingham, Ala. He leaves BC with 4,382 yards rushing, 38 rushing touchdowns along with 236 yards receiving and two receiving touchdowns. His 4,618 all-purpose yards are the most in Boston College history.

"Ever since I was a kid playing Pop Warner, it was always my dream to play in the National Football League," said Dillon. "To have this opportunity now to go chase a childhood dream is all I could ever ask for. I can't thank my coaches, teammates and family enough for all of their love and support throughout my time at Boston College. The BC community welcomed me with open arms when I committed and I will always be proud to call myself a BC Eagle." For the third straight season, Dillon was named to the All-ACC first-team in 2019.   If this was Steve Addazio's last stand at Boston College, he went out with a bang. AJ Dillon ran for 178 yards and a touchdown, Aaron Boumerhi booted four field goals and the Atlantic Coast Conference's worst defense forced four turnovers as the Eagles beat sloppy Pittsburgh 26-19 on Saturday to become bowl eligible and perhaps give their embattled coach a lifeline. Boston College (6-6, 4-4 ACC) reached bowl eligibility for the sixth time in seven seasons under Addazio by beating the Panthers in Pittsburgh for the first time in 21 years. Dillon's ever-churning legs played a major role as the Eagles rolled up 264 yards on the ground against a team that entered ranked sixth in the country in run defense, allowing just 92.6 yards per game.

Dillon surpassed that total on his own, including a 61-yard dash to the end zone in the third quarter that put Boston College ahead to stay shortly after Pitt went in front on a 39-yard sprint by Vincent Davis. Dennis Grosel passed for 123 yards and a touchdown and added 51 yards rushing for the Eagles. Kenny Pickett threw for 323 yards for the Panthers (7-5, 4-4) but Pitt drives regularly bogged down in Boston College territory. A week after getting shut out on the road at Virginia Tech, the Panthers managed just a single touchdown against a team that ranked next to last in the ACC in points allowed and last in yards allowed. - Boston College/AP College Football

AJ Dillon has been Boston College's workhorse for three years. He outdid himself against Florida State. The junior running back carried a career-high 40 times Saturday, the most by a Bowl Subdivision player since Boise State's Alexander Mattison ran the same number of times against Fresno State last December. Dillon finished with 165 yards in the loss to increase his career total to 4,148. He's the eighth player in Atlantic Coast Conference history to reach 4,000 yards. Dillon's 27.2 carries per game leads the nation and is the highest since Texas' D'Onta Foreman averaged 29.4 in 2016. His career average of 24.2 attempts per game is the highest among active FBS players. - AP College Football

Boston College coach Steve Addazio likes to play old-school football, and his Eagles gave Syracuse a big taste of it. AJ Dillon and David Bailey combined for 414 yards rushing and five touchdowns, Dennis Grosel passed for 195 yards and three more scores, and Boston College blew past Syracuse 58-27 on Saturday , the Orange's fourth straight loss. BC (5-4, 3-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) set a school record with 691 yards offensively, averaging 9.2 yards per play, and the Eagles' 496 yards rushing were the most ever allowed by the Orange and just 22 yards off BC's school record set 46 years ago against UMass.

"When you can do what we do like we did it, that's overwhelming for a defense," Addazio said. "First of all, we move at a pretty good clip, and what happens on the other side, your DBs, your safeties, they're taking a beating, they're tackling 250-pound backs, and if you can stay on the field, you start to wear them down. They start creeping in the box, they start abandoning their coverage and then you're hitting them on play-actions." Dillon, who scored three touchdowns, rushed for 242 yards on 35 carries to boost his season total to 1,286. He entered the game ranked fourth nationally in rushing yards and rushing yards per game (130.5) for a unit that was averaging 255.6. Bailey added a career-high 172 yards rushing on 16 carries as the bruising backs -- Dillon weighs 250 and Bailey 240 -- had their way. - Boston College/AP College Football

Dillon ran 34 times for 223 yards against North Carolina State and Knox carried 23 times for a career-high 220 yards against Florida Atlantic. Dillon went over 100 yards for the fifth straight game and now has three 200-yard games in his career. He moved from fourth to second on the national rushing chart behind Oklahoma State's Chuba Hubbard. Dillon averages 137.7 yards per game; Hubbard averages 182.3. Knox ran for 205 yards against Virginia Tech last season and has had three 100-yard games this year. - AP College Football

Boston College easily showed why it's the best rushing team in the Atlantic Coast Conference. AJ Dillon ran for 223 yards and three touchdowns, David Bailey had two long TD runs with 181 yards and the Eagles pounded the league's top rushing defense in a 45-24 victory over North Carolina State on Saturday. Dillon had scores of 2, 3 and 8 yards in his fifth straight 100-yard game as BC (4-3, 2-2 ACC) ran for 429 yards on 60 attempts. The 6-foot, 245-pound Dillon is 75 yards away from passing Andre Williams' (2010-13) mark of 3,739 yards for most in school history.

"I just kept hearing about the No. 1 rush defense in the ACC," Dillon said. "When you're a competitor you want to go up against the best. They're the best rush defense, so we wanted to go with our best. I had a feeling today was going to be a great day, just the look in everybody's eyes, but I wasn't expecting what we did today." Dennis Grosel completed 6 of 15 passes for 103 yards in his first collegiate start for BC after Anthony Brown was lost for the season with a leg injury two weeks ago. "It's the greatest and worst practices in America," BC linebacker Max Richardson said of facing Dillon and Bailey, who's listed at 6-1, 240. "AJ and David are big guys, strong guys, they run hard." Backup QB Devin Leary was 15 of 33 for 259 yards and three TDs for the Wolfpack (4-3, 1-2). - Boston College/AP College Football

Coach Steve Addazio needed a response from Boston College after being embarrassed last week and his offense line, and running back AJ Dillon gave it to him in one of those early must-win games. Dillon ran for 150 yards and two touchdowns and Boston College bounced back from a horrible 24-point loss to Kansas and beat Rutgers 30-16 on Saturday. "I feel a lot better today from the standpoint that we responded. That's a growing thing," said Addazio, whose team was a 21-point favorite a week ago. "That's a thing that you have to grow in football. You got to get punched in the face - when you get punched in the face you got to be able to learn how to respond."

Boston College (3-1) did on a day almost 20 players and coaches returned to New Jersey. Local product Anthony Brown scored on a quarterback sneak and running back David Bailey tallied on a career-long 42-yard run as the Eagles ground out 272 yards in handing Rutgers (1-2) its second straight loss. "After last week, obviously came off disappointing loss," said Dillon, who scored on second-half runs of 1 and 4 yards. "We had to look within and I don't want to be over theoretical or anything like that, but we had to take a step back and realize what was important to us." The important thing was hanging together and playing tough. The Eagles did it on both sides of the ball. The win was Boston's College's 11th straight over the Scarlet Knights, and it extended its unbeaten streak against them to 14 games (13-0-1). This was the first game between the two founding members of the Big East Conference since 2004. The Eagles left the following year to join the ACC. Rutgers joined the Big Ten in 2014. - Boston College/AP College Football

Boston College coach Steve Addazio's plan was to get off to a fast start and take some key players out of the game quickly with a short week coming up. Mission accomplished. Anthony Brown threw for three touchdowns in the first half, AJ Dillon caught a touchdown pass and ran for two scores and the Eagles coasted to a 45-13 nonconference victory over Richmond on Saturday. Boston College then quickly turned its attention to Friday night's home matchup against Kansas. "We're onto Kansas," Addazio said. Brown completed 8 of 14 passes for 163 yards and didn't throw an interception, backup running back David Bailey had 97 yards on 13 carries, and Dillon finished with 86 yards on 17 attempts.   Boston College running back AJ Dillon was the talk of the Atlantic Coast Conference before last season. Named the preseason player of the year after winning the league's rookie of the year in 2017, Dillon was ready to take off in his second season with the Eagles. An ankle injury taught him a lot more about himself than he could have imagined. "Honestly, it's weird to say, but I do feel like the injury was a blessing in disguise," Dillon said Tuesday. "I felt like it taught me a lot about, obviously I'm not invincible. You've got to protect your body."

It even brought him back to reality, a bit. "I would say last year was a humbling experience," he said. "I came onto the scene freshman year. I ended up with the ACC rookie of the year, those kinds of accolades, things like that going into last season." - AP College Football
