  12/29/22 - RB Kennedy BrooksrSr/2022, Oklahoma, 5-11, 209 (DS#12 RB) + More +

Bob Stoops and Oklahoma were winners together again, just like old times. Kennedy Brooks ran for 142 yards and three touchdowns, Caleb Williams passed for three more scores and the 14th-ranked Sooners rode a dominant first half to a 47-32 win over No. 15 Oregon in the Alamo Bowl on Wednesday night. The victory marked a brief and happy reunion for the coach and school he led to a national championship and 10 Big 12 titles from 1999-2016. Stoops was called off a golf course to come out of retirement to coach the bowl game after the abrupt departure of Lincoln Riley for Southern California. "I've been out of it, came back," Stoops said. "It was fun. More than anything, I appreciate the young people, the guys in the program, embraced me, were all in, and worked hard." Stoops earned career win No. 191 and boosted his bowl record to 10-9. Getting the latest victory was maybe the easiest part in all this.

Just as important were the tasks of steadying the program overall after Riley's bolt west turned the program upside down. And he had to build a stable bridge to the new era under incoming coach Brent Venables, his former Oklahoma assistant who has spent the past nine seasons at Clemson. "They're getting a guy with passion, a guy that loves the game," Stoops said. "A winner." And the coach who once earned the nickname Big Game Bob also turned into Big Hug Bob when he got to embrace son and Sooners receiver Drake Stoops after a second-quarter touchdown catch. Drake walked on at Oklahoma in 2018 after Bob had retired. Oklahoma (11-2) raced out to a 30-3 lead as Brooks and Williams sliced up the Oregon defense. Brooks had 127 yards on just 10 carries in the first half with scoring runs of 16 and 29 yards, and another 40-yard run that set up Williams' first touchdown pass to Drake Stoops. - Oklahoma/AP College Football

OCT 11 BIG 12 OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Kennedy Brooks, Oklahoma, RB, Jr.,...In his first start of the season, Brooks rushed 25 times for a career-high 217 yards (8.7 per carry) and scored Oklahoma's final two touchdowns as the Sooners rallied from a 28-7 first-quarter deficit and a 41-23 hole with 2:45 remaining in the third quarter for a 55-48 win over No. 21 Texas. His 217 rushing yards were OU's most in 36 games and fourth-most ever against Texas. The redshirt junior registered a 65-yard run in the third quarter, the longest by an OU running back this season. He gave OU its first lead of the day (48-41) with 7:10 remaining in the fourth quarter on an 18-yard run and scored the game-winning touchdown with three seconds to go on a 33-yard rush. It was the highest-scoring game in series history. Brooks now has 10 career 100-yard rushing games and six with at least 150 rushing yards. - Big 12 football

  10/10/21 - RB Kennedy BrooksrSr/2022, Oklahoma, 5-11, 209 (DS#12 RB) + More +

Kennedy Brooks took the final snap for sixth-ranked Oklahoma, after freshman quarterback Caleb Williams had taken over when Spencer Rattler was again benched in the Red River rivalry game. Brooks ran for 217 yards and two go-ahead touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including a direct snap for a 33-yard game-winner with 3 seconds left, and the Sooners beat No. 21 Texas 55-48 in the highest-scoring game of 117 meetings in a series that will soon move to the Southeastern Conference. The Sooners appeared to be trying to set up for a game-ending field goal when Brooks instead broke free for a sprint to the end zone. The Sooners overcame a 28-7 deficit after the first quarter, matching the second-largest comeback in program history. And when it was over, Oklahoma students who were part of the sellout crowd at 92,100-seat Cotton Bowl Stadium streamed onto the field to celebrate with their team. - AP College Football

Kennedy Brooks ran for 217 yards and two go-ahead touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including a 33-yard romp with 3 seconds left, and sixth-ranked Oklahoma beat No. 21 Texas 55-48 on Saturday in the Red River rivalry that will soon move to the Southeastern Conference. The Sooners (6-0, 3-0 Big 12) appeared to be trying to set up for a game-ending field goal when Brooks instead broke free for a sprint to the end zone. Oklahoma hadn't even led until Brooks had an 18-yard score with 7:10 left that made it 48-41. His rush was the first play from scrimmage after OU tied the game and kicked off to Xavier Worthy, who had the ball stripped away by Caleb Kelly. Worthy did have nine catches for 261 yards and two scores, and his 31-yard TD catch tied the game with 1:23 left before the winning drive by the Sooners.

Texas (4-2, 2-1) had a 14-0 lead less than two minutes into the game. The Longhorns, who had won three in a row since a loss to future SEC foe Arkansas in Week 2, had never lost when scoring at least 48 points. The Sooners overcame a 21-point deficit, matching the second-largest comeback in program history. And when it was over, Oklahoma students who were part of the sellout crowd at 92,100-seat Cotton Bowl Stadium streamed onto the field to celebrate with their team. Caleb Williams completed 15 of 24 passes for 211 yards and two touchdowns after replacing Spencer Rattler, who had two turnovers in the first half that led to Texas touchdowns. Rattler did return to throw the tying 2-point conversion after Williams' 52-yard TD pass to Marvin Mims with 7:25 left. - Oklahoma/AP College Football

Brooks rushed for 1,056 yards and 12 touchdowns as a freshman in 2018. He followed that up by running for 1,011 yards and six touchdowns in 2019. Brooks sat out the 2020 season over COVID-19 concerns but is back now with the second-ranked Sooners and has told reporters that "I'd probably say I'm more explosive than I was a year ago."   Oklahoma running back Kennedy Brooks maximized his time while sitting out last season due to COVID-19 concerns. Brooks, who rushed for 2,067 yards and 18 touchdowns his first two years with the Sooners, refined his game while Oklahoma compiled a 9-2 season that ended with a Cotton Bowl win over Florida. Now that he's vaccinated, he's ready to jump back into action. "I'd probably say I'm more explosive than I was a year ago," Brooks said. "Definitely worked on my strength and my first step. Also catching the ball. I worked on everything -- my strengths and my weaknesses. It's all coming together. I'm going to take it day by day and stay consistent." Brooks adds his smooth running style to an offense that features Heisman candidate quarterback Spencer Rattler. As a freshman, Brooks ran for 1,056 yards and 12 touchdowns and averaged 8.9 yards per carry. The next season, he ran for 1,011 yards and six scores and averaged 6.5 yards per attempt. - AP College Football

Watching OU games mostly from his Texas home surrounded by family last season, Kennedy Brooks definitely felt the tug to be back on the field with the Sooners. "It was hard," Brooks said Wednesday in his first public comments since making the decision to opt out of the 2020 season. "I really wanted to go out there and actually play but I was just watching every game, cheering on my boys, and just hoping everything worked out well for them." Brooks said his decision to opt out stemmed from concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic and the uncertainty of the situation heading into the season.

Brooks was joined by defensive lineman Jalen Redmond and offensive lineman Stacey Wilkins in opting out among Sooners. "It was really just for me and my family's sakes," Brooks said. "With COVID really high and everything, we chose the best just to sit out for my health because we didn't really know anything about COVID, all the uncertainties, all the everything." But spending Saturdays on the couch watching instead of on the field left him longing for more with the Sooners. "I really love the game," Brooks said. "I really love playing at OU. I just wanted to play with my boys one more time just to be able to come back and just see what I can do." Brooks has topped the 1,000-yard mark in each of his two seasons on the field for OU, rushing for 18 touchdowns in the 2018-19 seasons. - Daily Oklahoman

Running back Kennedy Brooks and defensive lineman Jalen Redmond figured to be big pieces for the Sooners this season before each decided to opt out. Sooners coach Lincoln Riley, who declined to discuss players who had opted out during the season, said Friday that both would return for 2021. Brooks didn't rejoin the team at any point but Riley said he came to the facility several times during the season. Brooks' return would be a big boost for the running game, which could take a significant hit if Rhamondre Stevenson, especially after his 186-yard rushing performance in the Cotton Bowl, decides to make the jump to the NFL. Brooks had back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons the two previous years, averaging 7.5 yards per carry with 18 touchdowns. - Daily Oklahoman

Oklahoma running back Kennedy Brooks will reportedly sit out the 2020 season, according to The Athletic. Brooks, nor OU, has yet to publicly comment on the report; although, he's no longer listed on the Sooners' online roster. OU receiver Charleston Rambo was asked about Brooks' potential departure during a Zoom media session on Friday. There doesn't appear to be any animosity between Brooks and his teammates. "He has his reasons but we just have to go with the flow and go with what we have you know? It's between him and God," Rambo said. "That's his decision and we're with him on everything, and it's no different than what he was when he played with us. Opting out does not make him no different than what he's been doing. That's still our brother, regardless." Brooks rushed for 1,056 yards in 2018 and 1,011 yards in 2019. He has also recorded 18 career touchdowns and averaged 7.5 yards per carry. - Norman Transcript

Oklahoma football players will return to campus for offseason workouts July 1, using facilities sanitized by fogging and spraying applications, wearing workout clothes disinfected with special detergents, and with the availability of a quarantine area in case they test positive for the coronavirus. Those are some of the protocols OU announced Tuesday in a detailed outline that accompanies reopening of its athletic facilities. Football players will return first, in a phased approach that will allow other athletes back at a later date. Before athletes join workouts initially, they will be tested for COVID-19 test during an assessment. Daily screenings prior to workouts will take place after that. OU head athletic trainer Scott Anderson said in a release that the school has been preparing for this moment "in some form" since OU's facility closed March 13. "Our priority is precaution while making preparations," Anderson said, "in what are very fluid circumstances." - Norman Transcript

Oklahoma's run game is critical to its Air Raid offense, however incongruent that might sound. Lincoln Riley has made it a priority since he arrived in Norman. Running backs are among football's most injured positions, and the Sooners haven't been exempt from that. Rodney Anderson, Trey Sermon, T.J. Pledger and Kennedy Brooks - practically every meaningful scholarship back the past three seasons - has missed time. This fall, OU must work around the potential absence of Rhamondre Stevenson, a productive junior-college transfer who was suspended for the Peach Bowl and could miss more time in 2020.

OU's running backs totaled 2,506 yards and 30 touchdowns in 2018. They ran for 435 fewer yards and 13 fewer touchdowns in 2019, when the run game focused more on Jalen Hurts at quarterback. Hurts ran for a team-high 1,487 yards and 20 touchdowns. He is a rare breed in terms of what he can handle physically, so don't expect that kind of offensive focus this season. With redshirt freshman Spencer Rattler likely to take over at quarterback, the Sooners won't have the option, and they can afford to lean on running backs again. - Norman Transcript

Oklahoma hired DeMarco Murray as its running backs coach Monday, bringing back the school's career leader in all-purpose yards, career touchdowns and kickoff return average. Murray starred at Oklahoma from the 2007 through 2010 seasons. The Sooners won three Big 12 championships during that run. Murray helped the Sooners reach the BCS national championship game after the 2008 season. Murray had a seven-year NFL career that included three Pro Bowl selections. He rushed for 7,174 yards and 49 touchdowns and racked up 2,165 receiving yards and six more scores as a pro. Murray was the running backs coach at Arizona last season. He replaces Jay Boulware, who left for a coaching job at Texas, his alma mater. - AP College Football

Kennedy Brooks rushed for 160 yards and a touchdown to help No. 7 Oklahoma beat No. 21 Oklahoma State 34-16 on Saturday night. Jalen Hurts passed for 163 yards and a touchdown, rushed for 63 yards and a score and caught a touchdown pass for the Sooners (11-1, 8-1 Big 12, No. 7 CFP) in their fifth straight victory in the series. Oklahoma has won 21 consecutive November games dating to 2014. The Sooners will play Baylor in the Big 12 championship game next Saturday. Oklahoma State's Chuba Hubbard, the nation's leading rusher, ran for 104 yards and a touchdown for his 10th consecutive game with at least 100 yards rushing. The Cowboys (8-4, 5-4, No. 21 CFP) had their four-game winning streak snapped.

Oklahoma held Oklahoma State to 335 yards. Parnell Motley led the way for the Sooners with an interception, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. Oklahoma State's Matt Ammendola made a 25-yard field goal at the end of the first half to cut Oklahoma's lead to 20-13. Oklahoma went ahead 27-16 on a 93-yard drive that Brooks capped with a 3-yard touchdown run. With Oklahoma still up 27-16, Oklahoma State took a chance by going for it on fourth-and-three at the Oklahoma 27, but Dru Brown's pass fell incomplete. Oklahoma stopped the Cowboys again on fourth down in the fourth quarter. - AP College Football

Oklahoma and football coach Lincoln Riley both offered statements Saturday after a student made abuse allegations public against running back Kennedy Brooks the night before. Mallory Jech on Friday identified herself as an alleged victim of mental and physical abuse by Brooks, who was cleared by OU's Title IX office in an investigation nearly one month ago and has been since reinstated. He participated in Saturday's first preseason practice. Twenty minutes before the conclusion of that workout, OU released this statement:

"OU has been made aware of social media posts in reference to a recent Title IX investigation. Title IX reports and investigations are confidential in order to protect the privacy of both the individual reporter and the respondent involved in the investigation. University policy is to conduct investigations involving student athletes independent of OU Athletics.
