NFL teams are beginning to gear up for training camp, and with that come assorted roster moves. The Atlanta Falcons made one on Wednesday that included former Michigan defensive back Brad Hawkins, who was cut by the franchise to make room for veteran defensive tackle Eddie Goldman, according to the team. Hawkins, a safety, went undrafted in the 2022 NFL Draft and later signed with the Falcons as a free agent. He appeared at Atlanta's rookie minicamp back in May, an introductory series of workouts for first-year players, and there was a belief he could stick until training camp. The 6-foot-1, 221-pound Hawkins played five seasons at Michigan, where he collected 178 total tackles (seven for a loss), eight passes defended, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. He was a third-team all-Big Ten selection in 2021, and voted an alternate captain by his teammates. - Ann Arbor News

Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh called the ninth-ranked Wolverines' come-from-behind victory over Nebraska a "Clint Eastwood win." Jake Moody hit a 39-yard field goal with 1:24 remaining to lift Michigan to a 32-29 win over upset-minded Nebraska on Saturday night. "It was a tremendous, tremendous game, incredible really," Harbaugh said after watching Nebraska come back from a 13-0 halftime deficit and take the lead only to see Michigan rally for the win with two late field goals. "We're enjoying it, we're enjoying the incredible." Moody's fourth field goal came after Wolverines defensive back Brad Hawkins forced Cornhuskers quarterback Adrian Martinez to fumble, returning it 19 yards to the Nebraska 18 to set up the game-winner. "We practice pushing out the ball, stripping the ball, hitting the ball," Hawkins said. "That moment just touching the ball, striking the ball came through." Martinez said he thought the play was over when Hawkins took the ball away from him. "I'm not going to stand up here and make excuses for myself," Martinez said. "I thought the play was over. I was standing like I am now and thought the play was over. I've got to take care of the ball. That hurt our team." Michigan (6-0, 3-0 Big Ten) has won its first six games for the first time since starting 9-0 in 2016. - Michigan/AP College Football

Michigan's secondary got a boost on Monday with safety Brad Hawkins' announcement that he will return for the upcoming season. With Michigan defensive back Brad Hawkins reacts after breaking up a pass intended for Iowa tight end Nate Wieting (39) during the Hawkeyes' final drive late in the fourth quarter. Hawkins is the second defensive starter to announce his return, joining defensive end Aidan Hutchinson, who recently said he will return for the 2021 season. Hutchinson is recovering from a broken ankle suffered last season and required surgery. Right tackle Jalen Mayfield, defensive end Kwity Paye, linebacker Cam McGrone, are among starters who have decided to prepare for the NFL Draft. - Detroit News

Way back at the NFL combine while Cesar Ruiz was sharing his story with reporters earlier this year, he was asked to name a Michigan player no one was talking about who would have a big year in the fall for the Wolverines. He didn't hesitate. "Brad Hawkins on the defensive side of the ball," Ruiz, like Hawkins a Camden, New Jersey native, said at the time. "He had an ankle thing that kept him out a little bit (late last season), but if you watch what he's able to do on the field, if you watch what he's able to do in practice, he's special. "I think Brad Hawkins is going to have a great season, and no one's really talking about it, which I'm surprised. But I believe something special is coming for Brad."

Hawkins, 6-foot-1, 218 pounds, played in 11 games last season at safety - he missed the Indiana and Ohio State games because of the leg injury that never was specified by Michigan, but practiced for the Citrus Bowl against Alabama and played some snaps. He finished the season with 53 tackles and was named the team's most improved defensive player. He and Dax Hill, a freshman last season, are projected to be the starting safeties this season. Bob Shoop, Michigan's new safeties coach, appeared on the "In the Trenches" podcast in March and already had a good feel for Hawkins' abilities. "He brings a tremendous amount of experience," Shoop said. "I think the expectations are he's going to be one of the leaders of this unit." - Detroit News
