  08/22/21 - QB Jack SearsrSr/2023, Boise State, 6-2, 213 (DS#999 QB) + More +

There's been another hiccup in the race to name Boise State's starting quarterback. Quarterback Jack Sears reaggravated a lower-leg injury that kept him out of practice last weekend, Boise State head coach Andy Avalos said Sunday. Sears did not play in the Broncos' first fall scrimmage on Saturday, but Avalos said the hope is that he'll be back on the field by the middle of this week at the latest.

Sears - who joined the team last year after transferring from USC - and Hank Bachmeier are competing for the starting job again this year. Avalos said on Sunday that they were neck and neck in terms of completion percentage and touchdown-to-interception ratio before Sears' injury, but now the competition is on hold until he's able to get back on the field. "The positive is we feel very confident we can win with both of these guys," Avalos told reporters. "The improvement in the overall operation of the offense is night and day for both of those guys. The operation has obviously increased throughout the whole offense because of that." - Idaho Statesman

  11/03/20 - QB Jack SearsrSr/2023, Boise State, 6-2, 213 (DS#999 QB) + More +

The Boise State football team climbed four spots to No. 21 in the latest AP Top 25 poll on Sunday and cracked the top 25 in the coaches poll, coming in at No. 23. Last week, the Broncos made their regular-season debut in the AP poll at No. 25. They were just outside the top 25 in the Coaches poll. On Saturday, the Broncos (2-0) passed their first road test of the season with a 49-30 win at Air Force (1-2). Making his first start as a Bronco, quarterback Jack Sears racked up four touchdowns (three passing, one rushing), including a 75-yard touchdown strike to CT Thomas on his first pass of the game. Sophomore quarterback Hank Bachmeier missed the game for undisclosed reasons.

Starting safety JL Skinner also didn't make the trip, and Boise State lost running back George Holani, defensive end Demitri Washington and nose tackle Scale Igiehon to injury during the game. No information on the severity of their injuries was available after the game, but Washington was taken to the locker room on a cart. Boise State is one of five teams from the Group of Five in the AP top 25, led by Cincinnati (5-0), which moved up to No. 6 after a dominant win over American Athletic Conference rival Memphis. Two more undefeated teams - Coastal Carolina (6-0) and Marshall (5-0) - are Nos. 15 and 16, respectively, and SMU (6-1) is ranked No. 18. - Idaho Statesman

  10/31/20 - QB Jack SearsrSr/2023, Boise State, 6-2, 213 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Jack Sears' first throw as a starting quarterback in two years went for a 75-yard touchdown. That's not a bad way to make an instant impression with his new teammates. Sears threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score while filling in for starter Hank Bachmeier, Avery Williams scored on an 88-yard kickoff return and No. 25 Boise State beat Air Force 49-30 on Saturday night. The last time Sears started a game was 2018 - when he was a redshirt freshman at Southern California. He threw for 235 yards and two TDs that day against Arizona State. In between then and Saturday, he's had quite a journey: playing backup for the Trojans and sitting out last season to focus on his degree before transferring to Boise State. He played a few snaps in a blowout win last weekend against Utah State - throwing three passes - but nothing like his performance Saturday, with Bachmeier not making the trip for an unspecified reason. Asked about when he found out he was starting, Sears played coy. He did say the decision wasn't sprung on him. Sears made the most of his chance by finishing 17 of 20 for 280 yards and no turnovers. - AP College/Boise State Football

  10/21/20 - QB Jack SearsrSr/2023, Boise State, 6-2, 213 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Boise State released its initial depth chart Monday ahead of this weekend's season opener against Utah State, and a newcomer will back up sophomore quarterback Hank Bachmeier despite the fact that he hasn't played in a game since Nov. 27, 2018. Jack Sears, a graduate transfer from USC, will open the fall as the Broncos' No. 2 quarterback after signing with the team in February. He spent the past three years with the Trojans but sat out last season to focus on completing his undergraduate degree. Boise State coach Bryan Harsin said Monday that he's seen enough from Sears to be comfortable with him playing. He also said it's impossible to simulate the physicality and speed of a game during the week because, like at most programs around the country, the Broncos' quarterbacks are donning red jerseys in practice, which means they're off-limits.

In 2018, Sears was USC's No. 3 quarterback, but he impressed in his only outing of the season. Facing Arizona State, he completed 20-of-28 passes for 235 yards and two touchdowns. Harsin feels like he knows what Sears can do on the field. Now it's just a matter of him settling into another new system after having already gone through multiple offensive coordinators at USC. "That's probably the most challenging thing at the quarterback position, learning a new system," Harsin said. "It's really the same plays but in a different language." - Idaho Statesman

  05/19/20 - QB Jack SearsrSr/2023, Boise State, 6-2, 213 (DS#999 QB) + More +

The Boise State football team added a veteran quarterback to its 2020 recruiting class Monday with the signing of graduate transfer Jack Sears. Sears spent the past three years at USC but didn't play football last fall, opting instead to focus on finishing his business administration degree. He joins the Broncos with two years of eligibility remaining and can play immediately. In 2018, he served as the Trojans' No. 3 quarterback. He made his collegiate debut against Arizona State and completed 20-of-28 passes (.714) for 235 yards and two touchdowns.

As a senior at San Clemente High in California - the same program that produced Boise State linebacker Riley Whimpey - Sears threw for 2,602 yards and 37 touchdowns and added 1,135 rushing yards and nine more scores. He led the team to the 2016 CIF State 1-A championship and CIF Southern Section Division 2 title. Sophomore Hank Bachmeier is expected to return as the starter this fall at Boise State after going 7-1 last season while completing 62.6% of his passes and throwing for 1,879 yards and nine touchdowns. Redshirt junior Chase Cord appeared in eight games and made two starts. He suffered an injury Nov. 9 against Wyoming and missed the remainder of the season. - Idaho Statesman

  08/27/19 - QB Jack SearsrSr/2023, Boise State, 6-2, 213 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Southern California quarterback Jack Sears has entered the transfer portal after failing to win the starting job in a four-man competition. Sears, a redshirt sophomore, announced his plans in a statement he posted to Twitter on Tuesday. Sears' decision came less than one week after coach Clay Helton announced sophomore J.T. Daniels would start for the second straight season. "Just heard about it. Obviously, all the quarterbacks, the whole team is bummed out," Daniels said after practice Tuesday night. "Jack was my roommate at the hotels the whole year last year. He really has been like an older brother. He's been a great supporter for me, a great friend. I'm going to really miss Jack."

The Trojans held an open contest among all four scholarship quarterbacks during spring practice and training camp as part of their transition to the Air Raid spread offense. Freshman Kedon Slovis was named the backup, with redshirt junior Matt Fink third on the depth chart and Sears fourth. Sears seemed to be in contention with Daniels to start coming out of spring, only to fall behind Slovis and Fink over the course of camp. Helton said he and new offensive coordinator Graham Harrell recognized the emergence of Slovis, a three-star recruit from Scottsdale, Arizona, left Sears unlikely to see playing time barring a spate of injuries. - AP College Football
