Shi Smith, South Carolina, Player News

  01/31/21 - WR Shi SmithrSr/2021, South Carolina, 5-10, 186 (DS#31 WR) + More +

Shi Smith made a positive impression this week in his quest to become a professional football player. The former South Carolina Gamecocks standout had three catches for 57 yards Saturday in the annual Reese's Senior Bowl held in Mobile, Alabama. He was a favorite target for American team teammate and Texas A&M quarterback Kellen Mond, whose 32-yard connection with Smith was the game's longest play from scrimmage. Smith stood out at times during this week's all-star game practices and, by most accounts, helped his standing for the NFL Draft that begins April 29. - Rock Hill Herald

South Carolina wide receiver Shi Smith made his plans somewhat clear when he walked on senior day. Then his coach, Mike Bobo, shared his plans publicly. And Tuesday night, the Gamecocks senior said his goodbye. The Union County product could have come back for one season, owing to the NCAA's altered rule during the Coronavirus pandemic. But after four years in Columbia, Smith is moving on and declaring for the NFL draft. Smith worked his way back from a concussion to play his final college game on Saturday. He finished his career with 174 catches, 2,204 yards and 13 touchdowns. As a senior he often carried South Carolina's passing game, catching 57 passes for 633 yards and four scores. - Rock Hill Herald

All South Carolina football seniors have the choice: Stay or go. The NCAA's COVID-19 ruling from the summer means every player gets an extra year of eligibility, leaving many seniors with the choice. Some gave a hint at what they're doing Saturday, choosing to walk in the senior day ceremony. But interim coach Mike Bobo gave a little more clarity on a pair of players who have started games and played prominent roles this season. No decisions are fully locked in, but players have hinted where they're leaning, notably No. 1 receiver Shi Smith.

"He's told me that he is moving on," Bobo said. "But things can change. You never know, who gets hired and what they're going to do, but I think his plans are to move on." Smith is in concussion protocol at the moment, and it remains to be seen if he'll be able to play this coming Saturday in the season finale at Kentucky. This season, he blossomed to become the top - and sometimes seemingly only - option in the receiver group. - Rock Hill Herald

Whether it is Doty or Collin Hill at quarterback, they might not have Shi Smith to throw to against the Bulldogs. Smith left the game against Missouri with a concussion and didn't return. Bobo said Sunday night that Smith is in concussion protocol. If Smith can't go it will be a huge void for the Gamecocks. The former Union County standout. has 37 percent of the Gamecocks receptions and 38 percent of the team's receving yards. USC will need more from transfer Jalen Brooks, Josh Vann and Nick Muse in the passing game to pick up the slack for Smith. - Macon Telegraph

  10/23/20 - WR Shi SmithrSr/2021, South Carolina, 5-10, 186 (DS#31 WR) + More +

The acrobatic catches were as common as the sight of him going face mask-to-face mask with a defender. South Carolina's Shi Smith showed every bit of his ferocious talent, and temper, during the Gamecocks' 30-22 win over Auburn on Saturday. Smith's receptions were dazzling. The near-constant jawing, the refusal to back down from trash-mouth engagement? Well, he wasn't penalized. And the Gamecocks won, so...No harm done? "I want a guy that's a competitive, composed football player," USC coach Will Muschamp said, emphasizing "composed" with a pause before and after. "He and I have this conversation a lot. When you're really composed, man, you're hard to deal with because you still have your competitive edge and you still have your competitive nature."

Muschamp made it clear he wasn't angry with Smith. He would love to have more Shi Smiths on his roster. But it is difficult to find the balance between a game-breaker and a game-changer, a star receiver third in the SEC and 10th in the country in receptions (34 catches, 347 yards, 3 touchdowns) and a surly headache whose unnecessary actions could swing momentum. The Gamecocks can't afford to have their best (and just about only) receiver hurt their chances of winning. "I got to keep my composure a little bit more. I've been working on it," Smith admitted. "It definitely takes you out your game. With the couple drops I had, they was in my head." - The Post and Courier

Shi Smith remarked that he thought Auburn's defensive backs were trying to get him riled up so he'd lose his temper. "I would much rather say 'Whoa!' than 'Giddy-up!,' Muschamp said when asked about his players and emotion. He also admitted it's a delicate line to walk between telling a player to be aggressive while also telling him to rein in impulsive behavior. Smith did more jawing than catching in the first half. There were a few facemask-to-facemask confrontations where it was honestly amazing no flags were thrown. Smith certainly showed why he's so valuable in the second half. His touchdown catch, high-pointing a ball as his defender jumped in front of him, was pretty. His catch on the sideline where he tapped the ball with one hand and then caught it on his belly while lying on his back, was Beyonce. He's that good, but he has to keep his emotions in check if he's going to keep being that good. - Rock Hill Herald

Kevin Harris had two touchdown runs and South Carolina turned three interceptions into points to beat Auburn for the first time in 87 years. The Tigers (2-2 Southeastern Conference) had won eight straight in the series and jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the opening 10 minutes. But Bo Nix threw three interceptions and the Gamecocks (2-2) cashed in each time to win consecutive games for the first time in more than a year. Shi Smith had eight catches, including a 10-yard TD grab midway through the third quarter that put South Carolina ahead for good, 20-19. - South Carolina/AP College Football
