LSU managed seven selections in the 2021 NFL Draft that concluded Saturday - half of its 14 total in 2020 that tied Ohio State for the record in the seven-round format last year. But the Tigers are at least getting the band back together in Cincinnati as two rookies are joining 2020 overall first pick and starting quarterback Joe Burrow. Defensive tackle Tyler Shelvin of Lafayette was picked in the fourth round Saturday by Cincinnati after wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase was the fifth player selected in the first round on Thursday by the Bengals. "I'm getting back with my brothers and ready to go back to work," Shelvin said after going to Cincinnat. "I talked to Ja'Marr but not Joe yet," he said. "I know he probably is busy somewhere. But I know he'll probably call me. Me and Ja'Marr are very close, and we're both ready to get to work. I can't wait." Shelvin made 26 solo tackles and 39 overall with three for losses in 14 starts in 2019 when LSU won the national title at 15-0 with Burrow and Chase directing the offense. - Shreveport Times

One LSU defensive lineman has already decided to opt back in for the 2020 season and it's possible he may not be the only one to do so. Tigers coach Ed Orgeron acknowledged Tuesday that he's heard "rumblings" that star defensive tackle Tyler Shelvin, who opted out of the season in late August, is considering returning to the team and playing this year. "His family has called me and I know people are talking to him," Orgeron said. "I have not spoken to Tyler. I think some of his teammates are talking to him. But there's not been a decision yet...We'd take him back obviously and we want him back." Getting him back would be significant. Shelvin was the top defensive lineman on LSU's 2019 national championship team and had been viewed as one of the top defensive linemen in the SEC entering this season. - Baton Rouge Advocate

LSU defensive tackle Tyler Shelvin will opt out of the 2020 college football season, a source confirmed with The Advocate on Monday afternoon. Shelvin was expected to start at defensive tackle in new defensive coordinator Bo Pelini's 4-3 scheme, and the 6-foot-3, 346-pound junior is expected to be one of the top defensive linemen taken in the 2021 NFL draft. Shelvin is yet another key departure from LSU's roster, which, now only has five total returning starters from the lineup that won the College Football Playoff national championship in January. - The Advocate

LSU coach Ed Orgeron told "Off the Bench" that junior defensive tackle Tyler Shelvin still needs to cut weight before the season begins. Starting July 24, teams can hold in-person meetings and conduct walk-through practices with footballs. Shelvin is listed at 6-foot-3, 346 pounds, and it isn't the first time Orgeron has gotten on the tackle for his conditioning. The Lafayette native weighed 380 pounds when he arrived on campus in 2017, and Orgeron praised him last season for cutting down to a "slim 343" at one point. Shelvin had a breakout season in 2019, when he started in 13 games at nose tackle and recorded 39 tackles and three tackles for loss in former defensive coordinator Dave Aranda's 3-4 scheme.

Shelvin is expected to have a major role in new coordinator Bo Pelini's 4-3 defense, and Orgeron said there will be instances where Pelini will use two big tackles like Shelvin and 6-foot-4, 340-pound nose tackle Siaki "Apu" Ika. The weight just needs to get dropped. "First of all, if Tyler don't lose weight, I might get a Mack truck to bring him out there," Orgeron joked. "I do believe he will. I do believe he's going to get down. I believe in Tyler." - Baton Rouge Advocate
