It was another banner year for Alabama in the NFL draft, but one former Crimson Tide star did not hear his name called by a pro team last weekend. Dylan Moses, a former 5-star recruit and a first-team All-SEC pick in 2020, went undrafted and later signed a free-agent contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Moses battled injuries during his Alabama career, including a knee ligament injury that forced him to miss all of 2019 and a torn meniscus that he played with throughout this past season. Speaking to reporters Thursday night in Mobile, Saban said Moses going undrafted was not only unexpected, but perhaps a little unfair. He added that Moses should have been credited for playing hurt the entire 2020 season, in which he helped Alabama win the national championship.

"It had nothing to do with what kind of football player he is," Saban said prior to his speaking engagement at a fundraiser for Team Focus, a youth mentoring organization founded by former college football coach and television broadcaster Mike Gottfried. "It was all based on medical grades by the teams, which, frankly, was a little surprising to me. My time in the league, when guys came back and played, that usually got (them) out of that '5' medical grade, which is 'undraftable.' It might have been a '4' medical grade, which means a guy does have an injury that could be a problem in the future, but he's come back and played with it, so we have to give him an opportunity. "I certainly think that's where Dylan Moses should have fallen for sure, and should have gotten an opportunity, because he played all season long for us. And I think that should be a good enough indicator that he can play in the NFL." - Birmingham News

Alabama linebacker Dylan Moses is signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars after not being picked in the 2021 NFL draft, ESPN and NFL Network reported. The reports added that Moses will be placed on the non-football injury list as he continues to recover from February surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his knee. The injury, which Moses said he played through last season without realizing its severity, is considered non-football within the NFL's collective bargaining agreement because it happened before he joined the NFL. Although Moses had been projected as a mid-round pick, he instead will earn minimal guaranteed money as an undrafted free agent while also having little assurance about a roster spot once he comes off the NFI list. - Birmingham News

Dylan Moses' return from a major knee injury in 2019 apparently involved another one in 2020. Speaking to reporters Monday as part of Alabama's second NFL pro day, Moses said he had surgery Feb. 9 to repair a torn meniscus. "It happened, I believe, in the third game of the season," Moses said, which would have been the high-scoring game at Ole Miss. "That's when I really started feeling it. It was said it was a bone bruise but it kept bothering me throughout the year and I just never really spoke up about it. I'm the type of person that, if I'm in pain or something, I never want to leave the field so I just didn't say anything about it."

Moses started all 13 games of his senior season and led the team in tackles with 80. Nick Saban spoke later Monday and referred any questions about Moses' knee to team doctor Lyle Cain. "I don't know if he had a torn meniscus," Saban said. "You can talk to the doctor about that. I know he had issues with his knee. We drained his knee a few times. Dr. Cain made all the decisions about how we should manage him through the season. Dylan was very aware of it and I do think it affected his performance a little bit." - Birmingham News

Alabama linebacker Dylan Moses confirmed Thursday that he is entering the 2021 NFL draft. Moses, who returned in 2020 for his senior season, turned down a chance to play an additional college season in 2021 that would have been made possible by the NCAA's blanket eligibility waiver. Moses made the announcement in an Instagram post. Moses is projected as a mid-round pick in April's draft. He joins four underclassmen who declared for the draft Thursday afternoon: quarterback Mac Jones, wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, cornerback Patrick Surtain and defensive tackle Christian Barmore. Defensive lineman Phidarian Mathis announced Thursday he is staying in school. - Birmingham News

Alabama linebacker Dylan Moses revealed in an Instagram post Saturday afternoon that he was not fully recovered from 2019 knee surgery while playing this season, resulting in him playing through pain each game. Moses also said he considered quitting football but was motivated by his teammates and family to continue playing. "I been through a lot all my life and I've been strong and persevered through everything. But 2020 took a major toll on me mentally and physically," wrote Moses, who added that his grandmother died from COVID-19 complications.

Moses wore a sleeve over his right leg and went through a 1-on-1 warmup, including extensive stretching of his right leg, from the school's training staff about an hour before Friday's Rose Bowl semifinal game in Dallas. A preseason All-American in 2019, Moses tore his ACL during an August 2019 practice and missed the entire season. He returned to practice this August but acknowledged that he had a "mental block" that coach Nick Saban brought up when he noticed Moses was not performing at his usual level. - Birmingham News

Dylan Moses and his teammates said they weren't out for revenge, but he didn't deny that a loss to LSU in Tuscaloosa last season added some juice to the heated rivalry on Alabama's side. The senior linebacker, who initially committed to LSU before flipping to Alabama, used the word "chippy" to describe the action under the lights at Tiger Stadium. "[The plan] was just to come out there and play balls to the wall...Take it one play at a time, just not to play with emotion," he said after the 55-17 victory. "We all obviously remember what happened last year, but we just wanted to come here and do our job."

That chippiness didn't manifest in penalty yards, though. Alabama's Daniel Wright was ejected for targeting after a hit to the head of LSU wide receiver Jaray Jenkins. Otherwise both teams combined for 7 penalties for a total of 58 yards. But it was the Tigers who were playing mind games, Moses said. "It was a little chippy," Moses said. "You know with LSU, they came and tried to get in our heads a little bit. But you know our guys, had to hold ourselves back and continue playing the game." Alabama's roster features a dozen Louisiana natives, including Moses, but none was more impactful than Devonta Smith. The Amite City native racked up 231 yards and three touchdowns, both records for a visitor at Tiger Stadium. - Baton Rouge Advocate

The Lott IMPACT Trophy, given to the nation's top defensive player for both his performance and character, will have six finalists instead of the usual four and will be presented in February. The finalists will include one each from the Power 5 conferences and one at-large finalist from the other Division I conferences. Three semifinalists from each league will be chosen on Nov. 18 and one finalist from each conference will be named on Jan. 7. The award, sponsored by the Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation, is usually given in December. It will be presented on Feb. 21 in Newport Beach, California. The changes were the result of the coronavirus. The winner receives $25,000 for the general scholarship fund of his school. Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott presents the IMPACT award, which stands for integrity, maturity, performance, academics, community and tenacity. - AP College Football

A group of FBS head coaches was less convinced Alabama is the No. 1 team in the country after Saturday night's record-setting 63-48 win at Ole Miss. The Tide lost nine of its 14 first-place votes from last week's coaches poll, but remained No. 2 in Sunday's version of the poll. Alabama held onto five first-place votes as Clemson strengthened its grip on No. 1 with 55 of the 62 possible votes. Ohio State, No. 5, continued to receive first-place votes from two coaches. In the Associated Press poll, Alabama lost six of its eight first-place votes from last week. It remained No. 2 with two first-place votes, ahead of No. 3 Georgia, which received one first-place vote. The polls set up a meeting Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium between No. 2 Alabama and No. 3 Georgia. - Birmingham News

There are those already placing an asterisk on the 2020 college football season due to the cancellations by the Big Ten and Pac-12 conferences. Of course, the 2019 season bore somewhat of an asterisk for Alabama, which missed out on the College Football Playoff for the very first time. Four days before the Crimson Tide opened with a blowout of Duke in Atlanta last August, they lost inside linebacker Dylan Moses for the season due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Moses, who was a Butkus Award finalist as a sophomore in 2018, decided to return to Tuscaloosa for a redshirt junior season and is ready to make amends. "I want to put the punctuation to the back end of my career here at Alabama," Moses said recently on a Zoom call. "At the same time, I want to affect my teammates. That's the reason I came back. I care about them and I love them, and I want us to get back to how it used to be." Moses promises he won't be cautious during his return, which will be the Sept. 26 opener at Missouri. "It's been a long process," he said. "I was trying to rush that process, but my body kept telling me, 'No.' Now I feel great, and I don't have any second thoughts." - Austin American-Statesman

Everything was on track for Dylan Moses a year ago as the junior linebacker prepped for his statement season. All-American hype came with Butkus Award talk and a sure first-round pick should he leave early. Everything changed Aug. 27, just days before opening the season with Duke in Atlanta. A torn ACL on Tuesday of game week sent a shock through a Crimson Tide defense that would be decimated by injuries all season. So, instead of participating in his first NFL training camp, Moses is back in Tuscaloosa for a senior season few predicted this time last August. The Baton Rouge product is again healthy and itching for redemption in this unconventional season.

At times, Moses admits, he might have been too eager to get back out there. "I was trying to rush my process, but my body kept telling me no," Moses said Tuesday. "As time went on and I got more and more strong there were times I would go out on the field without a brace. And I feel great." There's no hesitation to test the knee two practices into his return. "I don't think about it, don't have any second thoughts or do second guessing when I'm on the field," he added. "I actually feel really good. I feel once it's game time, I'll be ready." - Birmingham News

Alabama middle linebacker Dylan Moses has sustained a knee injury that requires surgery. Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban said Wednesday Moses was injured in Tuesday's practice and is "out for an indefinite period of time." Saban says the loss is "certainly a character check for our team." Moses was likely the second-ranked Crimson Tide's top defender after the loss of a number of standouts to the NFL, including inside linebacker Mack Wilson. Alabama opens the season Saturday against Duke in Atlanta. Moses was a finalist last season for the Butkus Award given to the nation's top linebacker. He led the team with 86 tackles. The Tide had already another projected starter at inside linebacker, Joshua McMillon, to a preseason knee injury. That left freshman Christian Harris topping the depth chart going into the season at an already thin position. - AP College Football

The Butkus Award honoring the nation's best linebackers kicked off its 35th annual selection process today by announcing its collegiate and high school preseason watch lists. Each watch list contains 51 linebackers, mirroring the legendary “51” pro jersey associated with the Award’s namesake Dick Butkus, who was recognized by NFL Films as the best defensive player in football history.

The Collegiate Butkus Award watch list includes candidates from 39 universities, including returning finalist Dylan Moses of Alabama who won the 2016 high school Butkus Award, and returning semifinalist Markus Bailey of Purdue. The High School Butkus Award watch list includes candidates from 47 secondary schools across 22 states, with Georgia schools fielding the most candidates (6). Semi-finalists will be named November 4, finalists November 25, and winners on or before December 10. Appearing on the watch list is not a requirement to win the award. - The Butkus Award
