Ohio State football's defense had a lot to boast about Thursday night. When the Washington Redskins selected Chase Young with the No. 2 pick of the 2020 NFL Draft, it made the Buckeyes the first program with a defensive player taken in the top five picks of three consecutive drafts. The Browns selected cornerback Denzel Ward No. 4 in 2018 and the San Francisco 49ers selected defensive end Nick Bosa No. 2 last season. Young's selection also allowed Ohio State to pull into the lead for all-time first-roun d draft picks with 82. The Buckeyes went into the night tied with USC.Jeff Okudah's selection at No. 3 by the Detroit Lions and Damon Arnette's selection at No. 19 by the Las Vegas Raiders extended the Buckeyes' new lead in that category. The sele ction of LSU (and former OSU) quarterback Joe Burrow, Young and Okudah marked the first time in the common draft era that three former teammates have gone with the first three picks. Prior to the draft, Young was asked on ESPN's GameDay about Okudah's pr ediction that he will win the NFL's Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2020. "Jeff is like my blood brother," Young said. The Detroit Lions have found their future at the cornerback position. Lions general manager Bob Quinn used the No. 3 overall pick Thursday night on Ohio State cornerback Jeff Okudah, the consensus top cornerback in this class. He becomes just the third c ornerback the Lions have taken in the first round of the draft since it was condensed to seven rounds in 1994 (Bryant Westbrook & Terry Fair). Okudah has elite foot quickness, size, speed and is physical in press coverage. He committed only one penalty t his past season for the Buckeyes (late hit vs. Michigan). He notched 35 tackles, defended 12 passes, had three interceptions and forced two fumbles this past season. - DetroitLions.com

Months before Jeff Okudah's breakout junior season at Ohio State, a film session convened with Jeff Hafley. It was January 2019 when the pair met to review the previous season's games. Hafley, who had just been hired as the Buckeyes' defensive co-coordin ator and secondary coach, selected cut-ups from each time a quarterback threw a pass to a receiver covered by Okudah. For an hour, they went over every target. "That's the first coach who had ever done that for me," Okudah said. Hafley spoke with confide nce as he provided feedback. A former defensive backs coach in the NFL, he had tutored All-Pro cornerbacks that included Darrelle Revis and Richard Sherman. He told Okudah he'd improve.The Ohio State cornerback believed him. "I just listened to hi m talk," Okudah said last fall, recalling their first meeting. "When you play football long enough, you're around guys where you know if they know what they're talking about. I knew after that conversation that he knew exactly what he was talking about." Okudah ultimately shined as a junior, paving the way for him to become one of the top selections in the NFL draft, which is scheduled to begin with the first round Thursday. Jeff Okudah's lock-down performance at cornerback helped Ohio State football's defense emphatically return to prominence in 2019. It also made him one of the most coveted NFL Draft prospects at the position. On Wednesday, the junior announced - in a lett er to his late mother published at The Players Tribune - that he will leave the Buckeyes to pursue that opportunity. Okudah is the second Ohio State player to declare early entry for the draft, following running back J.K. Dobbins' Monday announcement. De cisions are forthcoming from defensive end Chase Young, slot cornerback Shaun Wade and others as to their 2020 status. Okudah recorded 35 tackles with three interceptions, two forced fumbles and a team-high nine pass breakups. 2019 THORPE AWARD FINALIST: Jeff Okudah, Ohio State,...Okudah has spear-headed a Ohio State pass defense that ranks No. 1 nationally allowing an average of just 126.2 yards per game. The Grand Prairie, Texas native has 25 total tackles (20 solo) three in terceptions, four pass breakups and two forced fumbles. None of the Buckeyes’ 11 opponents thus far has thrown for more than 218 yards and Ohio State has allowed just six passing touchdowns, which is best in the country. Jeffrey Okudah already was on the radar of NFL scouts as he began his second season as a starting cornerback for Ohio State. Most observers agreed he was a good-sized, tough, fast pass defender - even with a big fat zero on his career stat line for inter ceptions. Suddenly, he has three picks in the last two weeks - two in a prime-time Saturday night win over Nebraska - and his profile and NFL stock are rising. The junior from Texas acknowledged that the first interception - which came in his 31st game a nd was overshadowed by the Buckeyes' offensive onslaught in a 76-5 rout of Miami (Ohio) - helped to "kind of get a monkey off my back.""I think it did give me some confidence to show myself I could do it," he said. "Then coming out and following u p with a pretty good performance, I think that speaks to the confidence I came into the game with." Last Saturday, he broke in front of Wan'Dale Robinson on Nebraska's first possession for his first pick. Two Husker possessions later, Okudah grabbed a ti pped ball out of the air while lying flat on his back. "Sometimes you've got to thank the football gods," he said. Coach Ryan Day said Okudah has thrived in the new defensive scheme installed by co-coordinators Greg Mattison and Jeff Hafley. Hafley belie ves Okudah, a former five-star recruit, has improved with experience and has learned to practice harder and prepare better for the No. 4 Buckeyes. "He's spending a lot of time listening to the 'why,'" Hafley said. "Like he's starting to understand why ce rtain (pass) routes are coming. It's been pounded into the heads of Ohio State players since the winter, how losses to unranked opponents from the Big Ten West ended bids for the College Football Playoff the last two years. The Buckeyes seem to have received the message. Their dominati on of Nebraska in a 48-7 win on Saturday night showed as much. "If you look in the past, we've been here before," cornerback Jeff Okudah said. "We've been 4-0 and 5-0 before, so I think the goal now is to have a complete season and don't make any slip-up s. If we take it week-by-week and don't look ahead past anybody, I think that we'll be just fine."The Buckeyes (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten) might be more than just fine. They moved from No. 5 to No. 4 in The Associated Press Top 25 on Sunday, received a sea son-high seven first-place votes and are coming off a performance suggesting this might be the most complete Ohio State team since the 2014 national championship season. Up next is another Saturday game in prime time, this one at home against No. 25 Mich igan State (4-1, 2-0). Ohio State played man-to-man coverage almost exclusively. A long line of corners made that scheme pay off on their way to becoming NFL first-round draft picks. But the Buckeyes' cornerbacks didn't play up to that standard last year, and that contributed to the defense's well-documented woes. Damon Arnette and Jeff Okudah have heard about it for months. "Redemption," Okudah answered when asked about the cornerbacks' mindset as training began on Friday. "Right now, I feel like our backs are against the wa ll."Okudah was solid last season as a sophomore and had a stellar Rose Bowl against Washington. A five-star recruit from Texas blessed with size, speed and instincts, Okudah is regarded as a likely first-round pick next spring if he enters the NFL draft. But Okudah still doesn't have an interception in his career and hasn't made as many impact plays as he'd like. He said someone recently compared his first two seasons to those of Denzel Ward, who had a brilliant junior season before the Browns ma de him the fourth pick of the 2018 draft. Okudah wants to make a similar progression.
