One leader lost. One leader back. As the University of New Hampshire football team surges into the second half of its season on a four-game win streak, one that has it tied atop the CAA standings with James Madison, it continues to promote new players on the defensive side of the ball. The latest casualty was senior safety and captain Pop Lacey, who was scheduled to undergo surgery on Monday after injuring his foot in practice last week. He will not play this Saturday at Delaware. - Sea Coast Online

Jason Hughes kicked three field goals and Evan Gray put the finishing touches on New Hampshire's 23-6 victory over Duquesne with a 72-yard fourth-quarter touchdown run on Saturday. The Wildcats came within 58 seconds of notching their first shutout of the season, but Daniel Parr connected with Kareem Coles Jr. for a 12-yard TD to provide the final margin of victory. Hughes started the scoring for the Wildcats (2-2) when he capped an eight-play, 42-yard drive with a 45-yard field goal at the 11:16 mark of the first quarter. Dylan Laube's 6-yard TD run with 15 seconds left in the quarter put New Hampshire up 10-0.

Hughes added a 39-yard field goal in the second quarter and a 38-yarder in the third to put the Wildcats up 16-0. New Hampshire put the game out of reach when Pop Lacey picked off a Parr pass at the Wildcats' 43-yard line. An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Lacey pushed the ball back 15 yards, but Gray broke loose for a TD on the next play. Brosmer completed 17 of 31 passes for 202 yards, while Gray finished with 99 yards on 10 carries. Parr was 14-of-32 passing for 183 yards and two interceptions. New Hampshire had 433 yards of offense and held the Dukes (2-2) to 233, including just 50 yards on 23 carries on the ground. - AP College Football

Jason Hughes kicked a 27-yard field goal as time expired and New Hampshire turned back Rhode Island 27-24 in its Colonial Athletic Association opener on Saturday. Rhode Island pulled even with the Wildcats (1-2, 1-0 CAA) at 24-all on Zoe Bryant Jr.'s 2-yard touchdown run that capped a 13-play, 77-yard drive and took 4:16 off the clock. But that still left true freshman quarterback Max Brosmer and New Hampshire 90 seconds to make something happen. Dylan Laube returned the kickoff 27 yards to the New Hampshire 28 yard-line and Brosmer hooked up with Brian Espanet for a 41-yard gain on first down. Brosmer later kept the drive alive by running for eight yards on third-and-4, setting the stage for Hughes.

The Wildcats took a 7-0 lead just two plays into the game when Brosmer connected with Malik Love for a 78-yard score. Brosmer added a 2-yard TD run to put New Hampshire up 14-0 in the second quarter, but Ahmere Dorsey scored on a 4-yard run to get the Rams (0-3, 0-2) within 14-7 at halftime. New Hampshire stretched its lead to 21-7 at the 9:09 mark of the third quarter on Brosmer's 2-yard pass to Espanet. Rhode Island pulled within 21-10 on C.J. Carrick's 40-yard field goal heading into the fourth quarter. Hughes' 34-yard field goal just 37 seconds into the final quarter put the Wildcats up 24-10. But Vito Priore started Rhode Island's rally with an 11-play, 65-yard drive, ending with his 5-yard TD pass to Isaiah Coulter. - AP College Football
