2021 ALL-MOUNTAIN WEST FIRST TEAM (COACHES): RB - Charles Williams, Sr., UNLV,...Williams (Fresno, CA/Bullard High School) is the first UNLV running back to earn a first team all-league honor more than once in a career (2019) and is the first Rebel from any position to do it since wide receiver Ryan Wolfe earned three first team nods (2006, '08-09). With the most career rushing yards in the FBS (4,201) among all current players, Williams passed Tim Cornett (2010-13) to become UNLV's rushing king and later became just the fourth Mountain West player to reach the 4,000-yard mark. The Chuck Wagon led the league with 15 rushing touchdowns, which tied for fourth in school history, while his career-best 1,261 yards in 2021 tied Dominique Dorsey (2004) for the sixth-most in UNLV history. - UNLV Football

Charles Williams rushed for a career-high 266 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead UNLV to a 27-13 win over Hawaii on Saturday. Williams, already UNLV's career rushing leader, had a school-record 38 carries and rushed for 200 yards for the second time in his career. He became the fourth UNLV player to go over 1,000 in a season twice. In the process, he passed Boise State's Jay Ajayi to move into fourth place on the Mountain West Conference career rushing list with 4,035 yards. He has rushed for 32 career touchdowns, including a personal-best 13 this season.

Williams' 7-yard score gave the Rebels a 17-10 lead early in the second half. Matthew Shipley's 43-yard field goal got the Rainbow Warriors within 20-13 early in the fourth quarter before Williams added his final touchdown on a 47-yard run with under two minutes to go. UNLV outgained Hawaii 465-240. Ricky Johnson had two interceptions for UNLV (2-8, 2-4), which won its second straight game. Daniel Gutierrez kicked two field goals. Hawaii (4-7, 1-5) lost its fourth straight game. Nick Mardner had four catches for 139 yards, including a 79-yard TD catch from Chevan Cordeiro for the game's first points. Shipley had two field goals. - UNLV/AP College Football

Cameron Friel threw for 227 yards and two touchdowns, Charles Williams became UNLV's all-time leading rusher, and the Rebels beat New Mexico 31-17 on Saturday night for coach Marcus Arroyo's first victory with the program. Williams needed 45 yards to pass Tim Cornett (2010-13) for the single-season record, and he finished with 74 and two scores for UNLV (1-8, 1-4 Mountain West). Williams has rushed for 10 touchdowns this season and 29 in his career. Kyle Williams caught seven passes for 137 yards, his second straight game with 100-plus, and a touchdown for UNLV. Arroyo was introduced as the new coach on Dec. 13, 2019, becoming the 12th head coach in program history. CJ Montes and Isaiah Chavez combined to go 10-for-16 passing for 36 yards and a touchdown for New Mexico (3-6, 1-4).   The demands of being a football player at UNLV and a young father collided on Tuesday for senior running back Charles Williams. It meant he couldn't accompany his four-month-old daughter, Kamiyah, to her doctor's appointment. She was due for a round of booster shots and Williams didn't want to miss out on the milestone. So when he finally had his first break of the day, he FaceTimed his girlfriend, Mika, with the hope of comforting his baby girl: "Hey, you're going to be OK. … These shots are going to go well," he told her. "That was something to me like 'Yeah, this dude gets it,'" said David Wedley, who works with the football team as a director of student-athlete academic services. "He understands. He's mature. It's the final stamp of approval for this young man and what everybody thinks of him."

Williams is back at UNLV for his sixth and final season as one of the most productive players in school history. He's the program's first academic All-American. He'll juggle graduate courses this fall with his family and football as he approaches the school's career rushing record. Duties befit for one of the program's leaders "He's mature. He's got a good voice in the locker room...Those are culture things that are going to resonate," said Rebels coach Marcus Arroyo. "I'm excited to see him healthy in our system." - Las Vegas Review Journal

The Mountain West released its preseason football poll Thursday ahead of its annual media days at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, and UNLV is in a familiar place. At the bottom. The Rebels were picked to finish last in the conference's West Division by a panel of the league's media, garnering a total of 26 points - the fewest among the 12 teams in the league. Rival UNR was picked first in the West, earning 19 votes and a total of 141 points. Boise State was picked to win the Mountain Division for the ninth consecutive season. UNLV coach Marcus Arroyo said the Rebels "pay very little attention" to the preseason poll, but noted that "if we start worrying about that stuff, we're worried about the wrong stuff." "What anybody decides where you get picked has nothing to do with your football team. We don't control that," he said. "The only thing we control is how we play and how we work together." - Las Vegas Review Journal

Charles Williams has done a lot during his time at UNLV. The sixth-year running back has a 1,000-yard season, 19 career touchdowns and an All-Mountain West selection to his name. But his biggest accomplishment came last week, when he welcomed his daughter into the world. The first-time father said his daughter, Kamiyah, weighed in at six pounds, six ounces and measured 20 inches (she got her height from her mom, the 5-foot-9 Williams said). "It was a great experience watching her come into the world," Williams said. "I was speechless … She makes me happy every day I come home. I'm glad I've got her in my life now." The sure-handed back said that handling a newborn is not all that different from securing the football. "Basically the same: Don't drop it," Williams said. - Las Vegas Sun

The Mountain West has announced the indefinite postponement of all scheduled fall sports contests and MW championship events in response to ongoing challenges with the effective mitigation and management of the COVID-19 virus in conjunction with athletic competition. The MW Board of Directors prioritized the physical and mental health and well-being of the Conference's student-athletes and overall campus communities in its decision - as it has done throughout the course of the pandemic. The fall sports affected by today's decision include men's and women's cross country, football, women's soccer and women's volleyball (with the exception of the unique circumstances involved with the military service academies). Last week, the league announced that all fall competition in the sports of men's and women's golf, men's and women's tennis, women's swimming and diving, men's and women's indoor track and field, softball and baseball was canceled. At this time, there are ongoing discussions regarding the status of winter sports. - Mountain West Conference

UNLV's football team isn't finished playing at Sam Boyd Stadium, after all. The Rebels will return to their former home Sept. 5 to play Louisiana Tech. The university still plans on opening its season Aug. 29 against California at Allegiant Stadium, where the Rebels have a joint-use agreement with the Raiders. But a venue for the school's game Sept. 12 against Arizona State is not yet finalized. UNLV athletic director Desiree Reed-Francois said admission for the Louisiana Tech game is free for returning season ticket holders and discounted for new season ticket holders as part of the school's Faithful Fan pricing package. "This is our way of expressing our appreciation to our season ticket holders," Reed-Francois said. Also, seating for the game against Louisiana Tech is expected to be on general admission basis. The NCAA, however, has not yet cleared the return of college sports because of the coronavirus pandemic. - Las Vegas Review Journal

2019 ALL-MOUNTAIN WEST FIRST TEAM (COACHES): RB - Charles Williams, Jr., UNLV,...Williams (Fresno, CA/Bullard HS) is the fourth UNLV running back to be named First Team All-MW, joining Lexington Thomas in 2017, Dominique Dorsey in 2004 and Jeremi Rudolph in 2000. His net total of 1,257 yards during the regular season is the seventh-most in school history, led the Mountain West and currently ranks 16th in the nation. Williams joins former UNLV backs Dorsey (2004), Ickey Woods (1987) and Kirk Jones (1984) as a conference regular-season rushing champion.

The Chuck Wagon moved into seventh place on UNLV's career rushing list (2,445) and his six 100-yard games this fall gave him nine in his career, which ties for seventh in Rebel history. Williams went for a career-high 186 yards in UNLV's win over San Jose State in the home finale and sprinted for a career-long 80-yard run for a touchdown in last week's victory at UNR. His 11 rushing touchdowns ranked second in the MW and tied for sixth in UNLV history. - UNLV Football

Charles Williams scored from the 1 in the final 1:15 and Kolo Uasike picked off a last-gasp pass as UNLV came out on top of a wild fourth quarter with a 38-35 defeat of San Jose State in the last game at Sam Boyd Stadium on Saturday. UNLV (3-8, 1-6 Mountain West) built a 21-6 lead only to swap the lead four times in the final 15 minutes before coming out on top at the end of 49 years at Sam Boyd.

Williams, who entered the game as the Mountain West's leading rusher -- and ranked 29th in the nation -- with 933 yards, gained 186 more against San Jose State with three touchdowns. He scored twice in the fourth quarter, including the game-winner with 1:15 remaining to cap a nine-play drive. The Spartans (4-7, 1-6) zoomed into the red zone on the ensuing possession with an 80-yard first-down completion from Josh Love to Isaiah Hamilton, advancing to the UNLV 12. San Jose State had a third-and-goal at the 5 with six seconds left to play, but Love's pass was tipped at the line of scrimmage and intercepted by Uasike. Love threw for 465 yards and three TDs but was picked off four times. - UNLV/AP College Football
