The Cincinnati Bearcats are No. 11 in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll released Sunday. Cincinnati (3-0, 1-0 AAC) jumped four spots from No. 15 after opening American Athletic Conference play with a 28-7 win over South Florida on Saturday at Nippert Stadium. The Bearcats now have won a school-record 16 straight games at Nippert. Cincinnati is the highest-ranked non-Power 5 program in the AP poll. AAC foe UCF (2-1, 1-1) dropped from No. 11 to out of the poll following its 34-26 loss to Tulsa on Saturday. The defeat snapped the Knights' 21-game home winning streak. Cincinnati was picked to finish second behind UCF in the American Athletic Conference preseason media poll. The Bearcats climbed four spot to No. 11 in the latest Amway Coaches poll. It is their highest ranking in both the AP and Coaches polls since 2009. Then-12-0 UC peaked at fourth in both polls before losing to Tim Tebow and Florida in the Sugar Bowl. - Cincinnati Enquirer

Cincinnati safety James Wiggins will be wearing a new uniform number when the Bearcats open the season Sept. 19 at Nippert Stadium. The senior is ditching his No. 32 in favor of No. 1. Wiggins wanted a fresh start, something different. Head coach Luke Fickell suggested No. 1. Wiggins said he was reluctant to accept. "I've never worn No. 1 in my life because I'm not a rah-rah type of person," Wiggins said. "But i thought about it. If I want to make it to the league (NFL), I gotta change my ways. I can't be so humble. I gotta show people my confidence level, that I can do this. People on offense are like, 'Oh, he's got No. 1, we gotta target him.' OK. You can target me. It's going back the other way for six."

The only number Wiggins has worn at Cincinnati is No. 32. It's the number the 6-foot, 205-pound Miami, Florida, native wore while building a name for himself within the college ranks. It's the number he wore while being considered one of the physical freaks in the sport. It's also the number Wiggins was wearing when he suffered a torn ACL two days before last season's opener. "He's as talented a safety that I've ever been around," Fickell said of Wiggins, who was tabbed for the 2021 Reese's Senior Bowl Top-250 List on Thursday. "He can be a dominant player as a cover guy, middle of the field guy and tackler." - Cincinnati Enquirer

2019 PRESEASON PAYCOM JIM THORPE AWARD WATCH LIST: James Wiggins, Cincinnati, Jr.,...Wiggins was a Second-Team All-AAC honoree in 2018 after tallying 54 tackles and four interceptions while showing a big-play flair in the secondary. He started his season by earning a spot on Bruce Feldman's annual list of the freakiest athletes in college football and showed it on the field with four game-changing interceptions. His first career interception was in the second quarter of the opener at UCLA, which led to a Warren TD, giving UC a lead it would not relinquish.

Interception No. 2 came in the waning minutes against Ohio when he jumped a route on the goal line to end the Bobcats scoring threat and seal the win for UC. Wiggins' third interception came in overtime at SMU, an 86-yard interception return for a TD which gave UC its first extra-period win since 2008. The 86-yard run back was the fourth longest in school history and longest since current UC CB coach Mike Mickens had a 79-yard INT return for a TD against USF in 2007. His final interception of the year came late in the fourth quarter of the Military Bowl when he tracked down and hauled in a Hokies pass to seal UC's first bowl win since 2012. - Cincinnati Football
