Miami was a 31-point favorite against Central Michigan and won by five, a 14-point favorite against Virginia Tech and lost by a touchdown -- and was an 18-point favorite Saturday, losing again. This was the first time since 1974 that Miami lost to a team that entered with a 1-5 record or worse this deep into a season; that year, the Hurricanes lost to then 0-8 Florida State. - AP College Football

Shaquille Quarterman took a long look at leaving Miami for the NFL after his junior season, and it would not have been a shocker to see the Hurricanes' best linebacker turn pro. He ultimately came back, seeking a picture-perfect ending. "I think there's definitely a higher place for me," Quarterman said. He means those words in a literal sense. At Miami, All-Americans get their picture on the high on the wall of the team's practice facility. Quarterman looks at that wall, sees the best players ever to take the field with the "U'' on the side of their helmet — and wonders what it'd be like to be part of that group.

So the NFL can wait one more year. There are team goals he will chase as well, of course, but Quarterman simply wasn't ready to leave the Hurricanes with just a good collegiate resume. He wants a great one, and his final season at Miami starts Saturday in Orlando when the unranked Hurricanes take on No. 8 Florida in the resumption of one of college football's best rivalries. "It's huge," Quarterman said. "The rivalry started way before I was born. You've got people — very, very, very committed fans saying like, 'Hey, man, this is it right here. This is everything.' So you know that it's important. You would have to be blind and deaf to not know it's important. To bring that win home for this place, for this city, it would mean a lot." - AP College Football

Quarterman also conceded that he felt like he would be chosen higher in the NFL Draft if he returned in 2019. "Talking with Coach Diaz," he said, "even Coach [Mark] Richt at that time, it came down to what I honestly felt I was worth. A lot of guys come out their junior year. It's becoming more of a fashion to do that. But I don’t think they understand the long-term results of what that does.

"A lot of guys, two out of three juniors that come out, don’t get drafted. The one that does, who’s to say he goes in the first round? So I didn’t see the reason in leaving a year early, and leaving so much on the table. "The fact that I get to graduate this year, the fact that I get to do it with my guys that I came in with - I have my once defensive coordinator [as] my head coach- it’s almost like the stars have aligned for me. I think that’s a tremendous blessing." - Miami Herald

New Miami Hurricanes coach Manny Diaz says there's little doubt about the strength of his team - it's his linebacker crew. Shaq Quarterman, Mike Pinckney and Zach McCloud all arrived at Miami together three years ago as the team's starting linebackers and they will finish their careers together, too. Diaz, who served as Miami's defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for the last three years before being named head coach, and touted the trio's wealth of experience. He said Thursday during ACC media days that "they have seen it all in college football" and predicts their leadership will have a trickle-down effect on the rest of the defense, as well as the team. - AP College Football
