Jamie Newman, Wake Forest, Player News

Georgia's first opt out of the 2020 college football season couldn't be any bigger. Wake Forest graduate transfer Jamie Newman won't play for the Bulldogs after all, someone who is familiar with the situation confirmed to the Athens Banner-Herald. Yahoo Sports was first to report Newman's decision and Newman himself soon confirmed the news himself. Newman cited "uncertainties of this year amid a global pandemic," and said he will start training for the 2021 NFL draft where he's a possible first-round draft pick. "While we will miss him being part of our program, I fully support Jamie's decision and we will continue to regard him as a Georgia Bulldog," said UGA coach Kirby Smart via a statement. "Certainly we wish him nothing but the best in his quest for an NFL career and he knows he will always have a home at UGA."

Newman's high school coach Anthony Timmons was unaware Newman decided to opt out before the announcement. "Kind of surprising, but you know what LSU is losing some good players and there's a couple of players from different colleges opting out," said Timmons, who coached Newman at Graham High School in North Carolina. "I'm not quite sure what to fully make of it." The departure leaves Georgia with Southern Cal transfer JT Daniels, coming off a knee injury, as the leading candidate to start. The Bulldogs' other quarterbacks are redshirt frshman D'Wan Mathis, true freshman Carson Beck and redshirt junior Stetson Bennett. - Athens Daily Banner

Georgia graduate transfer quarterback Jamie Newman has opted out of the 2020 season, according to a person familiar with the situation. Newman transferred to Georgia after a career at Wake Forest and was expected to be the Bulldogs starting quarterback this season. Georgia is set to open the season Sept. 26 at Arkansas. Georgia has not commented on Newman’s decision. An announcement from the school could come as soon as today. - The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

On his first weekend on the job in January, UGA offensive coordinator Todd Monken helped seal the deal with the player who may be the Bulldogs quarterback of the future in 2021 Prince Avenue Christian five-star Brock Vandagriff. A few days after Memorial Day, the Bulldogs present and future became more interesting when JT Daniels announced he was transferring from Southern Cal to play for Georgia and Monken. After getting a waiver from the NCAA this summer, Daniels offers Monken a player with Power Five conference starting experience to push Wake Forest graduate transfer Jamie Newman for the starting job.

Newman brings a dual-threat skillset after rushing for 574 yards last season and throwing for 2,868 yards with 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Daniels is a former five-star who was rated the nation's No. 2 pro-style quarterback in 2018 out of Santa Ana, Calif., behind Trevor Lawrence. "The one thing I would say about Jamie is he is a better thrower, everybody talked about his athleticism but he's a better thrower than people think," Monken said. "And I think JT is a better athlete. So obviously there's film of both of those guys, JT as a young player at USC throwing the football. And there's film of Jamie running Wake Forest's offense very efficient." - Athens Daily Banner

"I know Jamie understands that he's playing at a higher level," said Anthony Timmons who coached Newman at Graham High School. "He's playing against more NFL caliber players for the opposition...This is going to be a challenge for him, but at the same time Jamie always rises to the occasion of challenges." Timmons described Newman while in high school as being able to stay calm under pressure and doesn't think that will change going from Wake Forest to a Georgia team that is now a perennial playoff contender. "I think he'll be even more calm," Timmons said. "Being this is his fifth-year in college, he's kind of that seasoned veteran. He's been in some hostile environments; he's played in some hostile games."

Newman became a starter after a few games into his freshman season and threw for 2,034 yards and 13 touchdowns while rushing for 750 yards and 12 touchdowns as a sophomore. He passed for 32 more touchdowns in his final two high school seasons while rushing for 17 more. Newman drew comparisons back then to Cam Newton, a player who Timmons looked up to and who starred in the state for the NFL's Carolina Panthers. "To me he's more of like a Donovan McNabb type guy," Timmons said. "His time at Syracuse and his time at the Eagles, he wasn't a 4.4 guy but he was able to run, he was able to move people, he was a stronger runner but could also throw but was a competitor and was tough." - Athens Daily Banner

Newman was a star at Wake Forest in the ACC, now he takes that show to the big stage at Georgia and the SEC. Newman threw for 2,868 yards and 26 touchdowns last year while also running for 574 yards and six touchdowns. While the competition level certainly gets elevated from the ACC to SEC, the talent he has around him makes the bigger leap going from Wake Forest to Georgia. The biggest concern is that his biggest passing games last season came against Elon, Utah State, Rice, NC State and Duke. Against Clemson, he was 6-for-14 for 41 yards and two interceptions. Newman needs to prove he can execute against the elite teams. - Opelika-Auburn News

The NCAA Division I Council on Friday announced that it was delaying a vote on a potential one-time exemption for Division I transfers until 2021. In February, the NCAA Division I Council's Transfer Waiver Working Group announced it was considering the proposal, with the goal of adopting new legislation in time for the 2020-21 academic year. Student-athletes in football, men's and women's basketball, baseball and hockey would join their brethren in other sports and be able to transfer from one school to another without sitting out a year, provided they meet certain criteria.

The vote had been scheduled to take place this spring, but has been delayed until January due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Division I Council will consider whether to allow a one-time transfer waiver for student-athletes in all sports early next year. In addition, the Council voted to allow graduate transfers to work on a second undergraduate degree at their second school. Previously, graduate transfers had been required to enroll in graduate school. - Birmingham News

Todd Monken, the former offensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is Kirby Smart's choice to lead Georgia's offense. Monken, 53, was named on Friday to replace James Coley as the Bulldogs' offensive coordinator. Coley will remain on staff as assistant head coach. The change came after a talented offense, led by quarterback Jake Fromm, running back D'Andre Swift and a deep offensive line, finished only fifth in the Southeastern Conference with 30.79 points per game. Georgia ranked only 72nd in the nation in passing.

Georgia (12-2) missed the college football playoff after it was overwhelmed by eventual national champion LSU 37-10 in the SEC championship game. The Bulldogs finished with a 26-14 win over Baylor in the Sugar Bowl. Monken was Cleveland's offensive coordinator in 2019, though former coach Freddie Kitchens called the plays. Kitchens was fired after one season and Monken was not retained by new coach Kevin Stefanski. - AP College Football

With Jake Fromm heading to the NFL, quarterback Jamie Newman announced Saturday he will transfer to Georgia from Wake Forest for his final college season. Newman is coming off his first full year as the Demon Deacons' starter. He completed 60.9% of his passes for 2,868 yards, with 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He also rushed for 574 yards and six TDs. Wake Forest finished 8-5, losing to Michigan State in the Pinstripe Bowl.

Newman took over as the starter for the final four games of the 2018 season after Sam Hartman went down with a broken leg. He led the Demon Deacons to a 3-1 record. "After careful consideration, and guidance from my family, I have decided to enroll at Georgia as a graduate transfer," Newman wrote on Twitter. "I am excited about joining such a great football program." Newman gives Georgia a quarterback with significant college experience. Former walk-on Stetson Bennett, who was Fromm's backup in 2019, played just four games in a mop-up role. "I am ready to get to work, ready to make new friendships and committed to contributing to this great program," Newman said. "This journey will surely be one that I never ever forget." - AP College Football

Wake Forest says starting quarterback Jamie Newman plans to play elsewhere next season as a graduate transfer. The school announced Newman's unexpected move Tuesday, saying the redshirt junior had entered his name into the transfer portal. Newman recently earned his degree, with coach Dave Clawson saying in a statement that Newman had notified him of his plans and that he wishes Newman well at his next stop. In a statement on social media, Newman said his decision was based on wanting to "develop further and my desire to stretch myself and prepare for the next level."

Newman threw for 2,868 yards and 26 touchdowns with 11 interceptions for the eight-win Demon Deacons, who lost to Michigan State in the Pinstripe Bowl on Friday. He was also a physical runner with his 6-foot-4, 230-pound frame, running for 574 yards and another six scores. Wake Forest returns four players at quarterback next fall, headlined by Sam Hartman. Hartman started nine games as a freshman in 2018 but appeared in only four games this year and still has three years of eligibility remaining. - AP College Football

The pylon was in sight for Wake Forest's Jamie Newman as he cut through the defense on the way for a score in his return from a shoulder injury. That's when the quarterback extended his arms to each side, ball in his left hand, as he crossed the goal line in a fleeting celebration that marked the start of the 23rd-ranked Demon Deacons' 44-10 victory over North Carolina State on Saturday. "If Jamie could go, he was going to go," Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson said. "And Jamie could go. So he went." Newman threw for three touchdowns and ran for two scores, showing no signs of trouble from the injury that had sidelined him for one game and part of another. His status was uncertain -- at least according to Clawson's public comments -- ahead of the long-running instate series, though his performance was anything but.

Newman threw for 287 yards and ran for 30 more before checking out late in the third quarter. Clawson said he encouraged the 6-foot-4, 230-pound redshirt junior with a physical running style to slide or step out of bounds to avoid taking extra hits in his return. Not that Newman sounded worried. "I felt great, felt great all week," Newman said, "and I still feel great now." That helps explain why Newman and the Demon Deacons (7-1, 3-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) had this one wrapped up early. By the end, the school said, the 34-point margin was its largest ever against an ACC opponent at its BB&T Field home since September 1968. - Wake Forest/AP College Football

Jamie Newman threw for two touchdowns and Wake Forest relied on its impressive third-down conversions Saturday to beat Boston College 27-24. Newman completed 21 of 33 passes for 243 yards but was picked off once. Cade Carney added a TD run for Wake Forest (5-0, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference), which went 17 of 24 on third-down attempts. Anthony Brown was 20 of 28 for 240 with two TDs and two interceptions. Running back David Bailey threw for a TD and caught one, and AJ Dillon carried 23 times for 159 yards for the Eagles (3-2, 1-1). Clinging to a three-point lead early in the fourth quarter, Newman lofted a 27-yard TD to Scotty Washington, who made a leaping grab over Jason Maitre to make it 27-17.

BC then sliced it to 27-24 when running back David Bailey hit tight end Chris Garrison with a 16-yard scoring toss with just under seven minutes left. But the Demon Deacons converted a couple more third downs before punting the ball back in the closing seconds. Trailing 20-17, BC was lining up for a 43-yard field attempt when it was whistled for a delay of game as Aaron Boumerhi booted it through the uprights. Then, on the next attempt, the Eagles bounced the snap before holder Dennis Grosel threw an incomplete pass deep. The teams were tied 17-all at halftime. - Wake Forest/AP College Football

Jamie Newman completed 27 of 35 passes for 351 yards and five touchdowns, and Wake Forest eased past Elon 49-7 on Saturday at BB&T Field. The Demon Deacons (4-0) scored touchdowns on three of their first four drives. They ended any doubt as to the outcome just before halftime when Newman connected with receiver Sage Surratt for a 48-yard touchdown pass, Surratt's second scoring reception of the game, to give the hosts a 28-7 lead.

Newman tied a school record with his fifth touchdown pass, a 31-yard completion to Scotty Washington, to cap Wake Forest's opening drive of the third quarter. His work done, Newman watched the remainder of the game from the bench. Washington finished with nine catches for 141 yards and two touchdowns. Freshman running back Kenneth Walker added 91 rushing yards and a touchdown on nine carries. - Wake Forest/AP College Football

Jamie Newman came up with a pair of big plays on a clock-draining fourth-quarter drive, helping Wake Forest hold off North Carolina's comeback bid for a 24-18 win Friday night. Newman hit Scotty Washington for a 27-yard gain, then had a 4-yard scramble on third down to keep possession to help the Demon Deacons (3-0) take 5 minutes off the clock and add a field goal to a dwindling lead.

UNC (2-1) had a final drive with no timeouts with a chance for a third straight fourth-quarter comeback, but the game ended when Michael Carter didn't get out of bounds in time on a run to set up a final desperation heave from just across midfield. Wake Forest dominated the first half to lead 21-0, only to see freshman quarterback Sam Howell lead the Tar Heels on two fourth-quarter TD drives to get back in it. The win came in an unusual setting: a game between instate Atlantic Coast Conference teams that was designated as a nonconference matchup that didn't count in the league standings. The teams had agreed in 2015 to play this year and in 2021 instead of waiting until 2022 for their next ACC matchup amid the 14-team league's scheduling rotation for teams in opposite divisions. - AP College Football

With Wake Forest's running game limited by Rice's defense early in Friday night's game, the Demon Deacons decided to take advantage of their size at wide receiver. Jamie Newman and Scotty Washington made sure the decision worked. Newman was 21 of 27 for 312 yards and three touchdowns, Washington had seven catches for 158 yards and two touchdowns and Wake Forest beat the Rice Owls 41-21. "I think we're pretty good at receiver and protecting well right now," Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson said. "When teams gang up and play the run, you have to take some shots over top. We've got some big receivers that can go up and get it."

Newman, who started 13 of 14, also rushed for 29 yards. Sage Surratt finished with six catches for 45 yards and a score, and Kenneth Walker III had 125 yards on nine rushes, including a school-record 96-yard touchdown run with 13 minutes left in the fourth quarter, for the Demon Deacons (2-0). "We had a great day throwing the ball today," Washington said. "Jamie, he laid a lot of great balls out for us as a unit." Wake outgained Rice 513 yards to 321. - AP College Football

Jamie Newman will begin the season as Wake Forest's starting quarterback. Coach Dave Clawson announced the decision Sunday to start Newman ahead of sophomore Sam Hartman. Clawson says he was confident in both quarterbacks because they both looked capable when healthy. Hartman started the first nine games of 2018 as a freshman, completing 55 percent of his passes for 1,984 yards and 16 touchdowns before suffering a season-ending leg injury. Newman took over and led the Demon Deacons to an upset at North Carolina State and a Birmingham Bowl victory over Memphis while throwing for nine TDs and completing nearly 60 percent of his throws. - AP College Football
