For better or worse, the 40-yard dash is a significant factor in helping to determine an NFL draft prospect's worth, especially at a skill position like running back. Zack Moss ran the 40 twice at the NFL Scouting Combine on Feb. 28, and neither effort sufficed. One of a school-record nine prospects at the Combine, the University of Utah's all-time leading rusher ran a 4.72 on his first attempt at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, followed by a 4.65, making him the fourth-slowest of the 28 running backs to run the 40. It was revealed later that evening that Moss had tweaked his hamstring earlier in the day during other Combine drills, but he wanted to power through the rest. Either way, that 40 time would not do. That wasn't going to be a problem with Utah Pro Day slated for March 26. Moss would get his hamstring right, run the 40 again in Salt Lake City, and the 40 at the Combine would be an afterthought. The COVID-19 pandemic had other ideas. In the wake of the Pac-12 and the Utah athletic department suspending all athletic-related activities, Utah Pro Day was axed, which left Moss and his agent, Jamal Tooson, surveying their options.

"We were working closely with the University of Utah, reaching out to them to see if it would be canceled," Tooson told The Salt Lake Tribune. "When I was given confirmation they wanted to reschedule pro day, we needed to get ahead of the curve, get that workout done and get it to teams. "Zack's 40 was certainly one box teams had questions about. With the hamstring injury, he hadn't run consistently, so we needed to get that time and get it out there. That was critically important." On March 20, with a stay-at-home order bearing down on California, Moss ran a fully electronic 4.52 40 at Lions Field. A 4.65 wouldn't suffice, but a 4.52 certainly will. That mark would have been good for No. 10 among running backs at the Combine. - Salt Lake Tribune

Nearly two years ago, former Atlanta Falcons All-Pro and University of Utah alum Jamal Anderson went to Salt Lake City to meet Utes running back Zack Moss. Since then, the two have formed a relationship, and with Moss now just a few weeks away from almost surely getting drafted by an NFL team, the pair met Wednesday for a nearly hourlong chat on Instagram Live, discussing different topics centered on their common past at Utah and what awaits Moss in the professional ranks. "I'm not Marshawn Lynch. No way possible. That guy is a different animal, but I'm not surprised, because I did take a lot of things and try to implement them into my game and make them my own and put my own type of thing on them." - Zack Moss.

Moss, Utah's career rushing leader, said that despite the coronavirus pandemic, which will require some massive changes to the NFL draft later this month, he's still been able to work out just about every single day at Athletic Gaines in California. "It's still been a blessing for me to be able to have somewhere I can still work out," he said. The two spent some time talking about the NFL scouting combine, which went from Feb. 23-March 2. Moss said he met with officials from about 15 of the league's 32 teams, although he's fully aware of the fact he could get drafted by any squad (Anderson noted how he hadn't had much contact with the Falcons before they selected him in 1994). "It was just mind-boggling, the people you get to meet, just the learning that you continue to get every day that you're there," Moss said. "It's grueling, but it's something that you won't forget." - Deseret News

Zack Moss ran for a season-high 203 yards and No. 7 Utah rolled to a 35-7 victory over Arizona on Saturday night. The Utes (10-1, 7-1 Pac-12, No. 7 CFP) have won seven straight games and are the lone Pac-12 team in serious contention for a spot in the College Football Playoff after No. 6 Oregon lost to Arizona State 31-28 earlier on Saturday. Utah's defense was dominant once again, holding an opponent to seven points or fewer for the fifth time in six games. Arizona managed just 196 total yards and a big chunk of those came in the fourth quarter when mostly backups were playing.

Tyler Huntley completed 19 of 23 passes for 211 yards with one touchdown and one interception. The 5-foot-10, 222-pound Moss barreled through the Arizona defense all night, averaging 7.8 yards per carry. Tight end Brant Kuithe ran for two touchdowns on two carries. He had just one carry all season before Saturday. The Utes dominated the first half, gaining 291 total yards to Arizona's 56. They scored on Kuithe's 3-yard touchdown and Huntley's 3-yard pass to Demari Simpkins to take a 14-0 lead by halftime. - Utah/AP College Football

Zack Moss ran for 127 yards and two touchdowns and added 65 receiving yards to help No. 8 Utah rout UCLA 49-3 on Saturday night. Moss moved into second-place for career all-purpose yardage at Utah. Tyler Huntley threw for a season-high 335 yards and two touchdowns on 14-of-18 passing. Brant Kuithe had a career-high 132 yards and a touchdown on five catches. The Utes (9-1, 6-1 Pac-12, No. 7 CFP) beat the Bruins for the fourth straight season. Utah totaled 536 yards on offense.

UCLA (4-6, 4-3 Pac-12) saw a three-game winning streak snapped after committing five turnovers and averaging just 3.7 yards per play. Dorian Thompson-Robinson threw for 219 yards, but he had a pair of interceptions and a pair of fumbles. Thompson-Robinson was also sacked five times. Utah overwhelmed UCLA in every possible way starting in the second quarter. The Utes totaled 189 yards on 15 plays in that quarter alone and forced a pair of Bruin turnovers. UCLA drove deep into Utah territory on multiple drives only to see each drive end in a turnover or a flurry of sacks. The Bruins took their only lead at 3-0 after JJ Molson capped their opening drive with a 43-yard field goal. Utah took the lead for good after Huntley capped off the Utes' first drive with a 2-yard run. - Utah/AP College Football

Earlier this season, Zach Moss surpassed Eddie Johnson (1984-88) for most rushing yards in school history. In Saturday's 35-0 shutout of California, the senior broke the Utah school record for career rushing touchdowns, passing Del Rogers (1978-81). He now has 33. It was his 15th 100-yard rushing game, passing both John White (2011-12) and Devontae Booker (2014-15) for the school record. "He's a special back and he's got the whole package," said coach Kyle Whittingham. "I mean he's got a great skill set and we're fortunate to have him, fortunate he came back for his senior year." Moss has rushed for a league-leading 10 touchdowns this season and averages 104 yards rushing a game to rank second in the league. Cal coach Justin Wilcox praised Moss, saying: "He's a physical, physical guy. He runs angry." - AP College Football

No one knew for sure if an ailing Tyler Huntley was going to play for No. 12 Utah until pregame warmups. Seeing the quarterback's determination inspired Zack Moss and the rest of the Utes to a record-setting performance Saturday night in their 35-0 rout of California. Huntley, who has a lower left leg injury, limped around the field but never wavered in his promise to play earlier in the week. "He was pretty dicey all week long. You could see he wasn't 100 percent," Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said, noting the coaching staff game-planned with Huntley's lack of mobility in mind.

Taking a cue from his teammate's grit, Moss ran for 115 yards and two touchdowns while breaking two more school rushing records. "It makes you want to go harder," Moss said. "I mean, the guy's a warrior. . He worked so hard to get ready to play in this game." After becoming Utah's career leader in yards rushing last week, Moss increased his total to 33 touchdowns on the ground and surpassed Del Rodgers, who set the previous mark of 31 from 1978-81. Moss also reached 100 yards rushing for the 15th time, breaking the school record he had shared with Devontae Booker and John White IV. "It all feels really good, especially when it comes with winning," said Moss, who also finished with 89 yards on three receptions. California's defense had held 14 consecutive opponents under 25 points, the longest active streak in the country. - Utah/AP College Football

Zack Moss claimed the Utah career rushing record in the win over Arizona State. He is just getting started rewriting the record books. The senior, who now has 613 yards on 93 carries this season, needs one rushing touchdown and one more 100-yard game to become the school's all-time leader in both categories. Moss leads the Pac-12 with 102.2 rushing yards per game. California isn't backing down from the challenge of trying to stop him. "The front seven love going up against a running team, so we can hopefully impose our dominance on them and stop the run game," linebacker Cam Goode said. - AP College Football

With its star running back and quarterback knocked out of the game in the first half, No. 13 Utah's hopes for a special season seemed as dim as the dark clouds around Rice-Eccles Stadium on Saturday night. The rain kept falling but the mood changed considerably, with Zack Moss returning to score two touchdowns and break the school rushing record and Tyler Huntley playing long enough to steady the Utes in a 21-3 victory over No. 17 Arizona State. That said, it was the defense that stole the show on this rainy night. "Our defense was lights out," said Kyle Whittingham, a defense-first coach who admitted to exulting in the low-scoring affair. "I can't remember a better defensive effort, certainly not as of late."

The Utes (6-1, 3-1 Pac-12) ended Arizona State's modern-era record streak of 125 games with more than 10 points. The last time the Sun Devils were held under double-digits was a 28-0 loss to Southern California in 2008. Moss was held in check most of the game as Arizona State (5-2, 2-2) keyed on the senior back. But Moss broke through the line and outraced the defense for a 32-yard touchdown run that broke the rushing mark with 5:24 left. "It was an honor for us as a defense to get the ball back for Zack and then be able to witness history," Utah defensive tackle Leki Fotu said. Moss ran for 99 yards on 25 carries to push his total to 3,264. Eddie Johnson set the previous record, running for 3,219 yards from 1984-88. - Utah/AP College Football

Zack Moss rushed for 121 yards and two touchdowns, including a 91-yard scoring run in the opening quarter, and No. 15 Utah routed Oregon State 52-7 on Saturday. Moss, who was returning from a shoulder injury, sat out the second half. He is now just 55 yards away from passing Eddie Johnson (1984-88) as the Utes' leading career rusher. Tyler Huntley threw for 247 yards and two touchdowns for the Utes (5-1, 2-1 Pac-12), who were coming off a bye after downing Washington State to rebound from their lone loss the week before to USC. Moss missed the game against the Cougars with the injury.

The Beavers (2-4, 1-2) were coming off a 48-31 victory over UCLA at the Rose Bowl last weekend, just their second win this year and first victory over a Pac-12 opponent since last season. Quarterback Jake Luton, chosen Pac-12 Player of the Week after accounting for six touchdowns (five pass, one run) against the Bruins, threw for 131 yards but was intercepted for the first time this season. Receiver Isaiah Hodgins, who went into the game ranked second in the nation with an average of 126.4 receiving yards per game, was held to eight catches for 77 yards by the stout Utah defense. The Utes, ranked 14th in the nation among FBS teams for total defense going into the game, also held Oregon State to just 48 rushing yards. It was the Beavers' worst home loss since 1991, when they fell to Washington 58-6. - Utah/AP College Football

Utah's defense picked up where it left off last season. BYU paid a steep price for it. The No. 14 Utes scored three touchdowns off three BYU turnovers to pull away for a 30-12 victory on Thursday night in the opener for both teams. Utah left no doubt about how strong its defense could be this season. Over the final 30 minutes, the Cougars gained just 104 yards on 18 total plays. "We heard all the time about how they had a great offense," safety Julian Blackmon said. "They have a great team for sure, but we know that man-for-man we're the better team. So at the end of the day, we just wanted to come out and prove that."

Utah's defense did its part, and Zack Moss highlighted the offensive effort. Moss ran for 181 yards and a touchdown to help the Utes (1-0) earn their ninth straight victory in the 100th game in the Holy War rivalry. The senior suffered a hand injury in fall camp and wore a protective splint after the game. It didn't seem to limit it him at all. Moss propelled the offense after halftime by gashing the Cougars for a series of big runs. He averaged 6.2 yards on 29 carries. The defense took care of the rest. - AP College Football

After posting back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons, Zack Moss appeared primed for a jump to the NFL. He turned more than a few heads when he chose to return to Utah for his senior season. The decision felt like a simple one for Moss. He wanted to be the first in his family to graduate college. The 5-foot-10 running back also believed he had some unfinished business on the field.

"The only thing I'm worrying about is going out and having a successful season with my team and trying to get this Pac-12 championship down and sealed for us," Moss told reporters after the Utes opened their fall camp. Utah has graduated from underdog to the preseason pick to win the Pac-12 title. Moss is helping to drive those expectations. The senior ran for 1,096 yards and 11 touchdowns last season before missing Utah's final five games with a knee injury. - AP College Football
