Collin Hill, South Carolina, Player News

South Carolina's quarterback room is starting to grow somewhat thin. A school spokesperson confirmed Friday that fifth-year senior Collin Hill will not return after a challenging lone season with the program. Hill will begin training for USC's NFL pro timing day, according to the school. Hill also accepted an invitation to play in the College Gridiron Showcase in Texas on Jan. 17-21. Hill joined the Gamecocks as a grad transfer, following his former coach Mike Bobo from Colorado State, starting eight games before ceding the starting job to freshman Luke Doty. - Rock Hill Herald

Collin Hill ran for two touchdowns and Kevin Harris ran for two TDs and a career-high 171 yards as the South Carolina Gamecocks beat Vanderbilt 41-7 Saturday for their first victory of the season. “Right now any win helps regardless of where it is," Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp said. "At the end of the day, our guys stuck together. The Gamecocks (1-2, 1-2 SEC) won their 12th straight in this series by dominating Vanderbilt 486-249 in total offense and three sacks on a rainy day. South Carolina had more yards rushing (290) than the Commodores had total yards. Harris, the sophomore running back limited last season by an injured groin, had himself a day. He ran for a 25-yard TD early in the third, and he added a career-long 88-yarder early in the fourth. Muschamp said Harris is someone who gets better as the game goes on. - South Carolina/AP College Football

Collin's Hill's first game in a South Carolina uniform gave him plenty of time with the pressure on. Former Gamecocks defensive line coach Brad Lawing had an unprintable term for that particular sort of moment, but suffice to say, Hill was asked to lead his offense in some tight spots against the Tennessee Volunteers. USC faced a 14-point deficit, which he helped erase, and a chance to tie in the late going, which he and his offense could not pull off. But in the huddle, in those moments, he showed his teammates what he was capable of. "Three words: cool, calm and collected," tight end Nick Muse said.

"He threw a 40-yard bomb to Xavier (Legette), cool, calm and collected the next play. Threw a touchdown pass to Shi (Smith), next drive, cool, calm and collected. He got sacked a couple of times. "That's just who he is. If he throws an 80-yard bomb, he's going to celebrate but get ready to throw another 80-yard bomb. That's just Collin Hill." The Gamecocks' previous two quarterbacks, Jake Bentley and Ryan Hilinski, had a certain level of fieriness or exuberance in their games. There are obviously different ways to lead, and Hill showed his way. It's something he put to use across three stints as starting quarterback for now-Gamecocks offensive coordinator Mike Bobo before transferring from Colorado State. - Rock Hill Herald

The new-look offense under new offensive coordinator Mike Bobo righted itself after a magnificent start and a severe dip. USC marched 75 yards in 11 plays for a touchdown on its first drive, then had 50 yards the rest of the half. "We kind of just came out and punched them in the mouth and had a great opportunity after the whole punt-bobble thing," new quarterback Collin Hill said. "And didn't capitalize on that, and kind of just stalled out the rest of the half." Hill was 25-39 for 290 yards and a touchdown, but also had a tipped ball intercepted and returned for a touchdown. Flinging passes to favorite target Shi Smith (10 times for 140 yards), Hill regrouped in the second half and the offense finished with 379 yards. - Rock Hill Herald
