Duke center Will Taylor will be out indefinitely due to surgery on his right knee. Taylor is scheduled to have the procedure Tuesday for an injury sustained in the Oct. 17 loss at North Carolina State. The redshirt junior took over as the starting center after Duke lost starter Jack Wohlabaugh to a preseason knee injury. The school also announced Monday that redshirt senior cornerback Mark Gilbert won't return this season as he begins preparing for the NFL draft. Gilbert started the first two games befo re needing surgery in September to remove a loose bone fragment in his right foot. Gilbert was an Associated Press all-Atlantic Conference first-team pick in 2017 before going down with a season-ending hip injury in 2018. He missed the 2019 season while recovering from that injury. Duke hosts Charlotte on Saturday in its lone nonconference game. - AP College Football

Duke senior cornerback Mark Gilbert underwent surgery on Tuesday to remove a loose bone fragment in his right foot. He will be out of action indefinitely. The Fayetteville, N.C., native started Duke's opening two games, making eight tackles, and intercep ting one pass. In 29 career games, Gilbert has accumulated 65 tackles, 5.0 tackles for loss, seven interceptions, and 17 pass breakups. - Duke Football

Mark Gilbert is back after a physical and mental journey that forced him to miss two years of Duke football. After an All-American caliber season in 2017, the cornerback from Fayetteville looked like he was going to be a strong contender for the NFL draf t after his junior year. In the ACC, Gilbert, then a sophomore, ranked first in total passes defended (21), first in total passes defended per game (1.62), second in interceptions and second in interceptions per game (0.46) after starting 13 games that s eason. Nationally, he was tied for third in interceptions, tied for third in total passes defended per game and tied for third in total passes defended. While covering a Northwestern receiver, the cornerback appeared to overextend his left leg. The seaso n-ending dislocated hip injury resulted in surgery a day later. He was expected to return for the 2019 season. That is until a second hip surgery forced him to miss fall camp.Through therapy and rehab, the 6-1, 175-pound Gilbert hoped to return to the team, but he wondered at times "Was I ever going to play again?" When he realized he was going to go back to playing, he started having new worries. "When I kind of realized I was gonna play again, it was the thought of 'Was I gonna reach the elite level that I was playing in my sophomore year?" Gilbert said. "But as everything progressed, as I started returning to practice again, I started gaining all my confidence back." Now, he's back and he says he is better than before. He said his game IQ is higher, he's becoming a smarter player, and has a more physical aspect to his game than he had before. Back in 2018, Gilbert entered the season as one of the ACC's top cornerbacks with his eyes set on entering the NFL Draft the following summer. A dislocated hip suffered in a game at Northwestern changed that, ending the all-ACC cornerback's junior season . He missed the 2019 season recovering from the injury. He was cleared to return this spring and looked strong in the few practices Duke completed before the pandemic wiped out the rest of the spring work. Gilbert's return with an already solid secondary that includes underrated safety Michael Carter would be big things for Duke's defense. "I have no reason to believe that he's not going to start well this fall," Cutcliffe said. "I think it'll be the best secondary group that we've had, quite possibly t he deepest. Cornerback Mark Gilbert, a Fayetteville native who only played in two games last season because of a hip injury, underwent a second surgery during the offseason, Cutcliffe said Friday. Gilbert suffered a dislocated left hip against Northwestern and first had surgery in September. His status for fall camp was unclear before undergoing the second surgery, and Cutcliffe wouldn't say Friday when Gilbert, a first-team All-ACC selection in 2017, might be able to return.
