Liam Eichenberg, Notre Dame, Player News

Notre Dame's impressive run of putting offensive linemen into the NFL continued Friday night when Liam Eichenberg was drafted by the Miami Dolphins with the 42nd overall pick of the second round. The Dolphins traded up with New York Giants in order to select Eichenberg, who became the first Irish player selected in this year's NFL Draft. The 6-foot-6, 302-pound left tackle is the seventh Irish offensive lineman to be drafted since 2014, with none falling below the third round. Four of those went in the first round, including Notre Dame's three previous full-time starting left tackles - Zack Martin (2014), Ronnie Stanley (2016) and Mike McGlinchey (2018).

"I'm a guy you can plug in and play right now," Eichenberg said before Notre Dame's Pro Day in March. "I'm not a guy that needs a lot of development. I've been coached well. I use my technique and my fundamentals very well." Eichenberg, a Cleveland native, was the seventh offensive lineman picked in the draft behind Oregon's Penei Sewell at No. 7 to the Detroit Lions, Northwestern's Rashawn Slater at No. 13 to the L.A. Chargers, USC's Alijah Vera-Tucker at No. 14 to the New York Jets, Alabama's Alex Leatherwood at No. 17 to Las Vegas and Virginia Tech's Christian Darrisaw at No. 23 to Minnesota. - South Bend Tribune

The NFL Scouting Combine won't look the same this year, but Notre Dame will be well-represented in the critical part of the NFL Draft process. Eleven former Notre Dame players were invited to participate in this year's combine: offensive lineman Aaron Banks, Liam Eichenberg, Robert Hainsey, Tommy Kraemer, defensive ends Adetokunbo Ogundeji, Daelin Hayes, wide receivers Javon McKinley and Ben Skowronek, quarterback Ian Book, linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah and tight end Tommy Tremble. Only Ohio State, with 14, had more players invited than Notre Dame. Both Alabama and Georgia had 11 players invited as well. - South Bend Tribune

2020 OUTLAND TROPHY SEMIFINALIST: Liam Eichenberg, OT, Notre Dame (6-6, 302, Gr., Cleveland, Ohio): Eichenberg anchors a talented offensive front that currently leads the ACC in fewest sacks allowed per game (1.67, and 15 total) while also second in the ACC in rushing offense (229.7 ypg). Three different running backs have totaled seven 100-yard games this season and ball control has allowed the Irish to only trail for 38:10 minutes out of a total 540 minutes of regulation. Notre Dame has had three Outland winners, the most recent being defensive end Ross Browner in 1976 (also guard Bill Fischer in 1948 and tackle George Connor in 1946). In 2017 guard Quenton Nelson was a finalist and offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey was a semifinalist. - Greater Omaha Sports Committee

The medical staff was tested Saturday by Eichenberg when he appeared to get accidentally poked in the eye by of Florida State defender in the second quarter. Eichenberg eventually emerged from the locker room icing his eye. He returned to the game in the third quarter looking like a battered boxer and sporting a visor on his helmet for added protection. Kelly said Eichenberg, a captain, showed no hesitation at all about returning to the game. "It's crazy," Book said. "Looked like he got hit right in the face. He's just strong and he wants to be out there. He's tough." Even though Eichenberg is arguably Notre Dame's best offensive lineman, the unit didn't seem to miss a beat while he was sidelined. Left guard Aaron Banks slid out to left tackle and senior Dillan Gibbons entered at left guard. Book didn't couch his words like Williams did when talking about the Irish offensive line. He's convinced they're the best in the country, not just one of the best. - South Bend Tribune

The Atlantic Coast Conference and Notre Dame are considering whether the Fighting Irish will give up their treasured football independence to play as a member of the league for the 2020 season that has been thrown into question by the coronavirus pandemic. Two people involved in the ACC's discussions about scheduling for the upcoming season told The Associated Press on Friday the ACC is looking at an 11-game schedule that would include 10 conference games and start Sept. 12. There are other models also being considered.

Under the 10-plus-one plan, Notre Dame would play a full ACC schedule, the people told AP, speaking on condition of anonymity because talks are still ongoing and details have not been disclosed. Whether those games would count in the standings and the Irish would be eligible to participate in the ACC championship game - and be eligible for the conference's guaranteed spot in the Orange Bowl - is still to be determined. The final decision could come down to how revenue is shared between the conference and school, one of the people said. - AP College Football
