Washington football fans will get to see former Husky quarterback Jacob Eason during this month's NFL Draft. The only question is, when? The 6-foot-6, 227-pound signal caller from Lake Stevens is one of 58 players - and the lone Husky - who will particip ate virtually in the 2020 NFL Draft, the league announced on Thursday. In his lone season as UW's starter, Eason - a former five-star recruit and Georgia transfer - completed 64% of his passes, throwing for 3,132 yards with 23 touchdowns and eight interc eptions. Husky football fans now know they'll get some added access to Eason when he's selected during the NFL Draft's broadcast. It's yet to be determined, though, whether that will happen on Thursday or Friday. - Seattle Times

Washington quarterback Jacob Eason announced Thursday he will skip his final year of college and enter the NFL draft. Eason started 13 games for Washington last season after beginning his college career at Georgia and transferring following his sophomore season. He threw for 3,132 yards and 23 touchdowns for the Huskies in a season where at times he looked like a sure first-round pick and at other times it appeared that another season of college would help his draft status. "I want to thank everyone at the UW - my teammates, the coaching staff and the fans - for making these last two years so memorable," Eason said in a statement. "I'm very happy that I was able to come home and play for the Dawgs, and will always be grateful."Eason was a five-s tar recruit out of nearby Lake Stevens, Washington, who opted to go across the country to play at Georgia. He started as a freshman for the Bulldogs but lost the job to Jake Fromm during his sophomore season after suffering an injury in the season opener . Eason sat out the 2018 season after transferring to Washington and beat out Jake Haener for the starting job during fall camp in August. Eason completed 64.2% of his passes and had standout games early in the season against Eastern Washington, BYU and Arizona. His best game may have come in a loss to Oregon, in which Eason was 23 of 30 for 289 yards and three touchdowns. - AP College Football

Washington fired offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan on Sunday following a season where the Huskies' offense failed to match expectations. It's first major move by new coach Jimmy Lake and it came less than 24 hours after the Huskies closed out Chris Peter sen's tenure by routing Boise State 38-7 in the Las Vegas Bowl. Washington also announced that tight ends coach Jordan Paopao also would not be retained. Paopao has been in that role since 2013. "I've really enjoyed working alongside Bush and Jordan and appreciate their contributions to Husky football," Lake said in a statement. "These decisions are extremely difficult, but I believe it's in the best interest of our program to make these changes to align with the vision we have for our team moving forwa rd. I wish them both nothing but the best."Hamdan arrived in 2018 after previous offensive coordinator Jonathan Smith took the head job at Oregon State. Hamdan became an easy critic for fans as Washington's offense slumped following Smith's depart ure and seemed to lack innovation. This season, with Georgia transfer Jacob Eason at the helm, Washington had several games where its offense was the issue leading to losses, and play-calling at times was a significant problem. Including the bowl game wi n, Washington averaged 32 points per game this season. Its average last season was 26.8. In 2016, when the Huskies reached the College Football Playoff, they averaged 41.8 points per game. Hamdan was previously on Washington's staff in 2015 and 2016 befo re leaving to be the quarterbacks coach with the Atlanta Falcons for the 2017 season. - AP College Football

Jacob Eason threw for 210 yards and a touchdown and Washington sent out coach Chris Petersen with a 38-7 victory over No. 18 Boise State in the Las Vegas Bowl on Saturday night. Richard Newton rushed for 69 yards with a short touchdown run and threw a to uchdown pass for the Huskies (8-5). They capped an erratic season with a dominant finale for Petersen - who left Boise State to coach Washington - after he announced Dec. 2 he was stepping down after six seasons. Myles Bryant and Elijah Molden had interc eptions, and coordinator Jimmy Lake's defense allowed 266 yards. Lake is taking over as head coach.Jaylon Henderson threw for 48 yards and a touchdown for the Broncos (12-2). They lost for the first time in five appearances in the Las Vegas Bowl. Henderson replaced Hank Bachmeier in the second half after the freshman threw his second interception. The Huskies jumped out to a 17-0 halftime lead behind a methodical offense and suffocating defense. Bachmeier threw a pass up for grabs on the opening possession that was easily picked off by Bryant, and Andre Baccellia took a slant from Eason 17 yards into the end zone for the opening score. Salvon Ahmed made it 14-0 in the second quarter with an 8-yard touchdown run to cap a 13-play march, and Peyton Henry kicked a 32-yard field goal as the half ended. Eason threw a 26-yard pass to Marquis Spiker on the first play of the drive, the longest gain of the half and one of two plays for either team that gained 20 yards. Chris Petersen has always worked according to his own schedule. During eight seasons as the head coach at Boise State he brought the Broncos into the elite of college football, never in a rush to land the next big job despite being courted constantly by higher-profile schools. When he finally decided to jump to Washington in 2013, Petersen realized he needed a new challenge and Boise State needed a new voice in charge. And now after six seasons leading the Huskies, 14 overall as a head coach and more th an 30 years in coaching, Petersen has decided it's time to step away. "I'll be a Husky for life, but now is the right time for me to step away from my head coaching duties, and recharge," Petersen said.Petersen unexpectedly resigned at Washington on Monday, a shocking announcement with the Huskies coming off a 7-5 regular season and bound for a sixth straight bowl game under his leadership. Petersen will coach the Huskies in the bowl game, his final game in charge of the program he helped grow ba ck into national prominence. Then Washington will be turned over to defensive coordinator Jimmy Lake, who is being promoted and tasked with continuing the Huskies run of success over the past six seasons. The names changed. The script remained the same. A lot of Washington defense mixed in with just enough offensive punch. And plenty of frustration from Washington State after its high-scoring offense was shut down by its rival, again. For the seventh stra ight year the Apple Cup will reside in Seattle after Washington once again stymied the Cougars, rolling to a 31-13 victory on Friday. Jacob Eason threw for 244 yards and one touchdown, and ran for another, and Richard Newton scored on a pair of short TD runs for the Huskies.But as it has for several years, the difference was Washington's defense managing to keep the best scoring team in the Pac-12 grounded. The Cougars were held 28 points under their season average. Anthony Gordon threw for 308 y ards, but after the first drive of the game when Max Borghi scored on a 1-yard run the Cougars never again found the end zone. The Huskies (7-5, 4-5 Pac-12) have relished in their ability to stymie and solve the Air Raid offense, and after beating Washin gton in his first season in charge in Pullman, Mike Leach has yet to develop a counter. After three straight years where the Pac-12 North title was at stake for one or the other in the Apple Cup, this year's clash had little buzz and no implications outs ide of potentially a slightly better bowl game assignment for the winner. - AP College Football

Jacob Eason and the Washington offense had struggled for the better part of two games by the time the quarterback saw Aaron Fuller sprinting toward the front corner of the end zone. Then came a beautifully-thrown ball over Fuller's right shoulder for a 2 2-yard touchdown. Suddenly, the Huskies couldn't stop scoring. Eason threw for 243 yards and two touchdowns, Salvon Ahmed ran for three touchdowns and Washington rallied in the second half to beat Arizona 51-27 on Saturday night. It was an impressive bou nce back win - especially for the offense - after a deflating 23-13 loss to Stanford the week before."We know how we can play football," Eason said. "Some guys stepped up. We played our brand of football in the second half and it showed today." Wa shington (5-2, 2-2 Pac-12) trailed 17-13 at halftime but responded with two touchdowns in the third quarter to take a 27-17 lead. The Huskies left little doubt about the outcome early in the fourth quarter after two good throws by Eason. The first was a 39-yard completion to Jordan Chin over the middle of the field and the second was the 22-yarder to Fuller that led him into the corner of the end zone, just inside the pylon. If was quite the offensive performance after a rough first half. Winning games with elite defense is second nature to Washington. The Huskies are quickly silencing doubters who expected them to take a step back this season. Relentless defensive pressure and efficient offense blended together perfectly for No. 22 Washi ngton in a 45-19 victory over BYU on Saturday. The Huskies forced three BYU turnovers and scored a pair of touchdowns off those defensive plays. In four games, Washington has allowed just 18.3 points per contest and held each opponent under 400 yards of total offense. The Huskies' defense resembles past units that led the Pac-12 in scoring defense and total defense each of the previous four seasons. "We got people that are going to show up and work and we're going to execute when we're out there," lineb acker Brandon Wellington said. "Sometimes, it's not going to be pretty but we're going to figure out a way to get it done."Jacob Eason found a way to get it done on offense. Eason threw for 290 yards and three touchdowns while completing 24 of 28 pass attempts. The Huskies (3-1) totaled 477 yards on offense behind his efficient performance. Aaron Fuller, Eason's top target, tallied 91 yards on eight catches. Fuller had one touchdown catch and returned a punt 88 yards for another score. Eason put together his second straight 200-yard passing game. Washington has won all three games this season in which he has passed for at least 200 yards. After just three plays, Hunter Bryant was celebrating in the end zone. Five plays later, it was Sean McGrew's turn. And after another seven snaps, it was Puka Nacua catching his first collegiate pass for a touchdown. It didn't take long for No. 23 Washin gton to put last week's surprising home loss in the past. "It was just exciting knowing that doing our job we can do what we want to get done," Bryant said. "We can put points on the board not doing anything special, not doing anything extra, but just do ing our own job." Jacob Eason threw a 47-yard touchdown pass to Bryant on the third play of the game and added two more and Washington rebounded with a 52-20 romp over Hawaii on Saturday night.Eason and the Huskies (2-1) overwhelmed the Rainbow Wa rriors, taking a 21-0 lead in less than 9 minutes. Eason was 18 of 25 for 262 yards, Richard Newton had three short TD runs, and Washington quickly bounced back from last week's 20-19 home loss to California in its Pac-12 opener. "It always feels good to be in the end zone quick," Eason said. "Last week we struggled with some things and this week we got to jump on it early. That just shows how well we can bounce back and respond to adversity." While the final numbers look impressive, Washington did what was expected. Of all the throws Washington's Jacob Eason made playing his first game in nearly two years, the most impressive was one which hit the ground. It was a heave that traveled 60-plus yards in the air and while it was an incompletion, it showed off the big ar m Eason brought back from Georgia and left the home crowd buzzing. "I swear to you it came from heaven," said Aaron Fuller, the intended receiver on the play. "All I saw was it went into the clouds and then it came down and I was just like "wow." Eason h ad more than a few wow moments on Saturday, throwing for 349 yards and four touchdowns, and No. 13 Washington opened the season with a 47-14 win over Eastern Washington.Taking his first snaps since the 2017 season when he lost the starting job at Georgia to Jake Fromm, Eason showed no rust, carving up one of the top FCS programs in the country with a debut that will only increase the hype around the former No. 1 recruit in the country. "I was eager to see what he would do because I haven't seen h im play and been in games, and things like that," Fuller said. "There was maybe a small bit of doubt just to see how he would control the offense and things like that but I never doubted his arm or his upside. It was cool to see." Eason completed 27 of 3 6 passes and led Washington (1-0) on touchdown drives on four of its first five possessions. No. 13 Washington has named Georgia transfer Jacob Eason its starting quarterback for the season opener against Eastern Washington. Eason was expected to land the starting job after transferring to the Huskies but was in an extended competition with soph omore Jake Haener throughout spring practice and into fall camp. Coach Chris Petersen said Haener will also play in the opener.Eason started as a freshman at Georgia, playing in 13 games and throwing for 2,430 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2016. He w as injured in the first quarter of the season opener the following year and never regained the starting job after Jake Fromm took over and led the Bulldogs to the national championship game.
