*Preston Williams, Colorado State, Player News

Former Colorado State football player and Miami Dolphins wide receiver Preston Williams had 32 catches for 428 yards and three touchdowns in 2019 as a rookie before suffering a torn ACL. Without the kind of in-person contact coaches are not allowed to have right now with draft prospects, former Colorado State star Preston Williams might not have gotten the opportunity to become one of the NFL's top young receivers last fall. Karl Dorrell, the new head coach at the University of Colorado, said he learned a lot about Williams while interviewing him one-on-one at the NFL Scouting Combine and developed a relationship with him there that led to his signing as an undrafted free agent with the Miami Dolphins.

Dorrell was the Dolphins' receivers coach last season, and Williams was the Dolphins' leading receiver through the first eight games of the season, with 32 catches for 428 yards and three touchdowns, before tearing an ACL. "We felt that we got a steal when we were able to pick him up as an undrafted free agent," Dorrell said on a conference call Thursday. Dorrell said his initial meeting with Williams convinced him to dig deeper into his background. He talked to receivers coaches at Tennessee, where Williams played his first two seasons of college football, and CSU. He also took a closer look at Williams' Sept. 23, 2017 harassment incident in Fort Collins that kept him from participating in the on-field workouts at the Combine. - Fort Collins Coloradoan
