In a perfect World, every young quarterback who is drafted into the NFL would be able to take his favorite target with him. Robert Griffin III would be able to take Kendall Wright, Brandon Weeden would be able to take Justin Blackmon and Andrew Luck would be able to take Coby Fleener.
Well, we all know by now that RGIII and Weeden will need to find new targets to develop chemistry with, but, with the Colts holding the 2nd pick in today’s second round, Andrew Luck may be able to throw to his favorite target in Indy.
Every rookie QB would like a solid running game, offensive line and a great tight end to throw to. These attributes are safety blankets for his development.
With the exit of Dallas Clark from Indianapolis and the Top Three running backs off the board, Coby Fleener makes a ton of sense.
Luck and Fleener comnined for 18 Touchdowns at Stanford and were on a roll last year, with Coby catching 10, when Fleener came up lame and played out the season on one wheel. Fleener showed a ton of heart and determination in playing out the season and not missing a game, although many players would have sat out. This is the type of player that NFL teams covet and with the connection to Andrew Luck, this pick makes a lot of sense.
There are a couple of caveats.
The Rams could also use a 6’6″ target for Sam Bradford and they pick ahead of the Colts with the depth of this draft.
The Colts may decide to protect Andrew luck up front and chose between Cordy Glenn and Peter Konz.
Either way though, they chose a great year to “Suck for Luck” because as long as they don’t completely fall asleep, they will have some fortification surrounding their young pick.
